Posted: 02-05-04 22:50pm

Hi i'm usally really good at remembering things but I can't lately remember words. I remeber the definition of words but it can take a minute or more to pull up the word even if its easy. Like today I had trouble pulling up the word characterstics. Then I have another problem if I think of a word like the one above I can pronouce it in my head but not aloud its like I forgot how to say it. Its really becomign a problem when i'm talking to people or sometimes I need to remeber a what a word is but I have to ask someone. Also when i'm typing slowly half the words usualy have a letter or two switched around like when iwrote somoene it was spelt like that and I know how to spell it right. Please could soemone help me is this really normal I don't think it is. I'm not sure if its from stress or something?

Hey. I have alot of memory troubles but I doubt it's the same as yours. I found out that I have adult add. So I have always had some trouble remembering things. But since you didn't have trouble with it in the past then I doubt that this is your problem. I have trouble remembering alot of things. I forgot the name of a company that I worked for only 8 months ago. It took me 4 days to remember. I forget words too. I forget appointments, and dates (like birthdays). It is very frustrating and it has been getting worse. If you find out what's wrong or get any information on memory loss please let me know. I am only 29 years old. How old are you. Have you considered alzhiemers? It can attack younger people too. There are probably a million and one things it could be. Everything from a vitamin deficiency to brain damage. Good luck in your quest!!

I'm 48 & about 10 years ago I started expierencing memory loss & had trouble with words etc that I knew & as for names of people!!!! I thought of alzheimers but then I went to the dr & she pointed out what i'd been going through (4 miscarriages in 6 years among other things) & said that memory loss can be caused by stress or depression, it can also be caused by medications, various illnesses (inc ones that have nothing to do with the brain), & so on.

So first of all, consider when this started?? Had you begun taking any new medication (of any sort)? Had you been going through (or just passed through) a hard time at work, home, personally?? Are you having any other symptoms (headaches, nausea, stomache or bowel problems, pins or needles anywhere etc etc)?

Then go to a search engine & start with the basic question what physical problems can cause memory loss, then what mental then what chemical or try what can cause memory loss.

Then ask what natural treatments there are for memory loss (like vitamin supplements etc) also if you're on any meds check for side effects of them. I know that there are several natural supplements that help memory (excuse the pun but I think gingko is one!!).

great advice from purple... Stress anxiety and depression can really ruin your memory, but it is not permanent damage Smile
if it is casued by anxiety and depression you may also want to look into cbt. But I think I would try and get a physical first just to eliminate the physical cause factor first!

I also have the memory problems. I have had them for a while, but they did get worse when I got anxiety really bad. I am not sure if it is from the zoloft or from the disease itself. But the above advice is wonderful. When I get health insurance again, I am going to talk to my doctor about it and see if the zoloft could be causing it. Sometimes it is way worse than others and I really want to start going to college, but I am afraid I will not get very good grades because of this. If you come up with any solution, please let me know!

Hotasfrick,

you don't have to wait till you have insurance!!!! You should know better than that - go on-line to google or yahoo or whatever search engine you use & check out foods that help destress or foods that help memory.

For example - pumpkin seeds are high in tryptophan which our body converts to 5htp & sends to our brains to balance the serotonin levels & hence help reduce stress - even if you're over stressed & your body isn't doing this job properly eating foods rivh in tryptophan will still help & there''s lots of them.

Also there may be a vitamin (like gingko) which is good for memory but which you can get from some foods & you do have to eat so why not eat foods that will help with stress & memory?? Then if you can afford to buy the supplements that's even better!! :d
