Hope you all are doing well. It's a hard
lot in life we've been given, isn't it?
But I think there's a reason for
everything. We just may not know what it
is at the moment!
I spent years on and off meds. Those
years were unmitigated hell to me and
everyone around me. I damaged lots of
relationships, especially the most
important one with my daughter, who was
quite young at the time.
My breaking point was a total melt-down 8
years ago. When I was feeling better I
decided to comply with my meds. Forever.
My quality of life improved 100%. It
isn't easy. I'm definitely not perfect,
but it's so much better than living with
the turmoil and conflict I constantly
created.
One thing I do is lots of positive
self-talk. For every thought that passes
through my mind, if necessary. It keeps
me focused on the real issues. There's
1 question I ask myself about everything:
Do I have the [emotional, spiritual,
physical] energy to spend on this? It
helps sort out what's really important.
Currently, my meds are: lithium, geodon,
wellbutrin and cymbalta. It took lots of
trial and error to come up with this
combination but I'm very pleased with it.
Best of everything, to everyone,
everywhere.

Thanks Cece7. Bpd is challenging at best.
With children I think it is a never ending
struggle to try to ward off the episodes
of extremes.
I do not know much about CBT but what
little I know it sounds promising. Is
this appropriate for a five yr. old? Young
children have difficulty with expressing
their emotions and thoughts due to limited
vocabulary and ability to recognize what
they are feeling. I think my nine yr. old
can benefit. Any words of wisdom about CBT
and therapists? I want someone who is
familiar with bpd and understands the
effect it has on children. Kids present
differently than adults and the cycles are
rapid and furious. Thanks for any input!

Antigone, you are right that five is
probably too young for cbt. At nine he may
be able to benefit from it but it still
may be too early for that and I had not
considered their ages sorry. I guess it
can't hurt to try but you may want to
consult a professional. I would definitely
look for a therapist who has worked with
bpd kids and is well regarded in cbt
circles. Sorry i do not have more advice
for you but I'm happy to try and answer
any other questions you have You may
want to contact the clinic at UCLA for cbt
as I think they are the best or one of the
best in the country and may be able to
offer you an appropriate referral in your
area. Take care, good luck and keep in
touch.
Bakin, I'm glad you are feeling better
after that melt-down. It sounds like your
self talk is a variation on cbt's TEA form
exercise

as many old friends as I can today as I'm
at home sick with the flu. I hope life is
going well for you

I get you Posted: 05-04-08 17:52pm
This post is old, but I can relate.
I am currently going through a bunch of
meds. Lithium is my main med. I took
wellbutrin and I felt PERFECT for a week.
I drank some alcohol and I'm afraid it
messed up my brain chemistry. Last week it
was so easy for me to talk to people and
relate, and not act weird by analyzing
things too much. Now I find myself
drifting and thinking about trivial
matters. On top of that, my hands shake
furiously and it's very hard for me to
accept this side effect as people always
ask me: "why are your hands shaking like
that". Also I feel very delayed and
warped. Yesterday I had mild
hallucinations. One of the serious side
effects of wellbutrin is hallucinations.
BUT WHY did the side effect kick in after
a whole week?!?
I am seriously considering getting off
all meds. Today I stopped wellbutrin and
took a lower dose of Lithium. I am still
depressed. I am hoping I can get some good
sleep in and let my brain recharge it's
lost dopamine, seratonin, and
norepinephrine.
I was so happy and living my life to the
fullest last week, and I felt normal for
the first time in 2 years. What a F-ING
cocktease.

Ill, if you are going to go completewly
off your meds I hope you are in some other
form of therapy like cbt where you have
learned skills to help you move forward.
Take care

Hey Nutter Posted: 06-28-08 05:34am
Get in with a psychiatrist that
specializes in bipolar disorder. It sounds
like you are more leaning toward ADD or
ADHD than being bipolar. These diagnoses
tend to blend sometimes and are mistaken
for one another because of some of the
common symptoms are seen in all of the
above.
Folks....if you want the best treatment
available, find a pdoc that treats the
symptoms and not the diagnoses.
