Question About Having a Stillbirth... Posted: 01-26-07 14:07pm
My sister in law just had a stillbirth.
She was curious to know what to do about
lactation. Does she need to get a breast
pump or is it okay to leave the milk? How
long will lactation continue? Is there
anything she can do about the pain in her
breasts?

Hi,
i'm so sorry to hear about your sil's
stillbirth. I lost my 2nd baby at 37
weeks so I can relate to some of what
she's going through. As far as the
breast milk goes, tell her not to pump or
express because it will take longer for
the milk to completly dry up. She can
take warm showers and let the water run
over her breasts to relieve some of the
pain. Another thing that can help is
cabbage leaves placed in her bra (she
should wear a tight bra something like a
sports bra which will also help with the
pain). It's hard to say how long it will
take for the milk to dry up. It took me
about a week before I wasn't bothered with
the pain, but I still had milk for
months.
