Umbilical Cord.......and Other Worries
Posted: 01-28-07 23:43pm

My son is 12 days old.....We have a drs appt tomorrow but I thought I would express my concern here first just to get some piece of mind.

Where I am they tell you to do nothing around the umbilical cord except clean around it with water and a q-tip.....As a result of bleeding as it starts to seperate....I have been noticing it has blood around it all the time and the last time I changed him there was quite a bit of it.... It is not bleeding contiuious but I am such a worrier, I never had to deal with this with my first son as at that time they were telling us to clean it with rubbing alcohol, so there was never any bleeding becuase it was dried out already, there is really no question there for anyone to respond to just feels good to let someone else know how I feel...Thanx for listening.

Here is a question for you.....I have been going throught what you would call baby blues, which I know is totally normal, but at what point should I consider my baby blues to have turned into ppd, I have had two miscarriages before having damien, and I am finding as a result I am worring about everything, and my biggest fear right now is sids. I have an appt tomorrow and I am not sure if I should talk to him about this now or wait another couple of weeks to see if it gets any better, anyhow have any advice for me?

Thanks again everyone for all of the support

I would tell them at your appt usually they ask if ur feelin depresed etc, abotu the belly button iw oulda just cleaned it how u cleaned your first, theyre ok right lol. Dif drs have different views on things . They did it diff here then with my son but they put powder on it instead and tied a bandage around , josephs I cleaned with alchol it took 17 days to fall off jordynnes only took like 3.
But id let yrou dr know about your blues now in case so u can maybe have meds in case ya know it seems like everytime I got ot he dr I feel quite happy then I wind up feelin depressed so my last appt I filled out the paperwork and it asked if uve ever felt hopeles sin the last 2 weeks I circled yes but eh they dont read the paperwork she didnt ask me about it , go figure but im doing better at the moment. But still u need to let em know in case it gets worse.

You should be cleaning the cord with alcohol not water. That is why they say not to give your baby a full complete bath until the cord falls off. The alcohol will dry up the dying skin causing it to fall off.

They told me to do nothing with trey's too but I would clean in with a bit of rubbing alcohol and his fell off when he was 7-8 days I think.

As for the ppd. If you can't stop crying, if you feel like hurting yourself or damien, if you feel like you just don't want to get up anymore or want to give the baby away. Anything that is really out of character is when it becomes worrisome. I would talk to the doc tomorrow and let him know and if you are that nervous about sids, so get a moniter that detects brathing/heartbeat. I had the angelcare one and it's great!!
