TTC: Provera, regular periods, and ovulation? Posted: 02-02-07 13:15pm
hello dr.
I just wanted to ask a question. I was put
on the medicine called Provera..which is
considered a type of progestrone. My
husband and I are trying to get pregnant,
and my cycles are very irregular...so my
dr. wanted to prescribe B.C for me to
regulate, but since we have been trying
for a whole year now..he decided to give
me the provera. I was told to take it once
a day for 5 days. and than I would get my
cycle, and i understand that 14 days later
I will ovulate. I was reading up on this
medicine, and it says that if you are
trying to concieve dont use this
medicine..I am confused because my dr.
wanted me to try this..and if this didnt
work for me, help me ovulate than he said
he would start trying fertility drugs...Is
this a good idea to get me regulated so
that I can ovulate? Thank you very much
for your help.

According to the symptoms (irregular
cycles and infertility) it seems that you
aren't ovulating and can be the reason for
sterility. Irregular cycles are typical
for women who are not experiencing
ovulation. Lack of ovulation is also a
reason for sterility. Birth control pills
are given for regulation of the menstrual
cycle. Birth control can make the cycles
regular, while a woman is taking the
pills. Birth control pills don’t
stimulate ovulation. In fact, they dampen
ovulation. Nonetheless, it is believed
that ovulation can be established
spontaneously after a woman stops taking
birth control altogether. The hormones
from the birth control pills somehow
awaken the hypothalamus to produce the
chemicals necessary for the production of
ova, or eggs. If birth control pills
don’t help stimulate ovulations, a
stronger prescription-based ovulation
stimulator can be taken (clomifen).
