Sorry - Serious Posted: 02-02-07 15:30pm
I think I started leaking again. I am
having some cramping and have to remain in
bed to keep from leaking. The doctor is
no longer in her office but set an appt
for monday. I am 16 weeks on monday. The
leaking isn't too severe, though. I
belong to a prom (premature rupture of
membranes) list server and these woman
told me that the amount I am leaking is
normal for prom at 16 weeks. It just gets
worse.
This just stinks. This sounds immature
but I never thought something like this
would happen. I had no problems with my
first birth and it literally takes me two
weeks off of birth control and one cycle
and I am pregnant. At least this time and
last time.
This is just so depressing. I joined some
high risk pregnancy forums but they are
dead. You guys give me a good laugh.

Sorry .I can't help you out with any info.
I just wanted to tell you that you will
be in my thoughts and prayers! It
doesn't sound like the doctors are too
worried about it?

If you are experiencing leaking, you need
to go be seen in the emergency room.
Didn't the doctor say your bag had closed
back up? Does he have any insite as to
why this continues to happen?

I see a perinatologist. My doctor doesn't
know why this happened as most cases of
prom is unknown. I have to go to the
hospital if I leak a pair of underwear,
start bleeding a lot or cramping. Prom
individuals sometimes continually leak
throughout their pregnancy which is the
reason they have to remain on bed rest and
drink about a gallon of water a day. It
is a miracle if someone who has prom
delivers a full term baby. I only leaked
on the friday I ruptured. Since I
stopped leaking so quickly, the specialist
thought it was a twin along with what the
ultrasound showed. The doctor also said
the other possibility was that I did seal.
If that happen, the bag is weak and the
chance of it leaking again is high (at
least that was my understanding). If this
is, in fact, leaking from the baby then my
poor baby.
If I do leak a lot or start cramping bad
then I will go to the emergency room. I
hate emergency rooms. They sometimes
don't take pregnancy this early seriously.
I heard of a patch that doctor's can use
to seal up the sac, if they know where the
leaking is...Mine doesn't yet because I
didn't show evidence when I first saw her.
I would really like to try that patch if
they do find leaking.
The biggest thing is that I truly thought
I was alright as I haven't evidenced any
leaking since jan 19th, when the whole
thing initially happened (i think that's
the date??).
Thanks everyone for listening to our woes.

I'm really sorry you're having so many
problems and worries. I hope everything
turns out ok!
Oh, and don't apologize for coming here to
talk. That's what we're here for and you
need a place to get it out.
Good luck!

would this work it the sac is weak? Did
they diagnose you for with true .P.R.O.M
and have they started any antibiotics?
I'm curious how they didn't see a twin at
the 7 week ultrasound you had but are
insistant that you miscarried. It seems
to me that you should maybe get a 3rd
opinion.

My first doctor wasn't good. He was the
one who didn't listen to me at all
regarding my thoughts of passing a twin,
the way the thing I passed looked, etc. I
went to the specialist and she looked at
the ultrasound quality and said that it
wasn't good at all. She stated that if
the twin was never formed, they probably
would have missed it. She explained that
when you go into a regular ultrasound and
have a "typical' ultrasound, technicians
usually look for black (fluid) with white
in the middle (baby)with the little
fluttering heartbeat - when it's that
early. If I did have a twin, it is
doubtful the lil' one was ever formed.
I described for her the thing I passed and
she said it did sound like I may have had
a twin but I will never know for sure.
That combined with how the ultrasound had
a split in the membrane (so hard to
picture - you would have to see it) and
there is evidence something was in that
part and it is still filled with
something.
The first doctor should have placed me on
antibotics immediately. He didn't and
sent me home probably to miscarry,
although he didn't say that. He told me
to check my temperature three times a day
and call if it got over 100. It got to
99.2. All of this is the reason why I
changed!! When you first rupture,
shouldn't you be placed on antibotics to
prevent infection. I did some reading and
read that you should get some type of
antibotics before 18 hours after you prom.
There are not a lot of articles on
proming this early, though.
I actually made an appt with the
specialist a week and a half later, when I
was disenchanted by my care from the
doctors. She gave me a a great ultrasound
with high tech equipment, listened to me,
explained so much... She gave me the two
test to check for leakage (same two I had
before). The doctor didn't see any recent
evidence of leakage. She said I didn't
have evidence of an infection and checked
me for group strep b. If I were positive
with gbs, she would have given me
antibotics...I was negative. It was
strange I was negative because I was
positive with my first child...I will be
asking about that.
This doctor is so great!! I am truly
happy with her. She did dx me with true
prom. That is on all of my paperwork.
She really has been careful with me. The
difference between my other doctor and her
is like night and day. She is very
knowledgable. I am hoping to get
additional information from her on monday.
You seem to know your stuff. Have you had
or do you know anyone who has experienced
this or some other high risk pregnancy??
Do you just read a lot???

Sometimes I just know things that makes me sound
smarter than I am.
how did she diagnose you with true prom if
you weren't currently leaking and your
amniotic sac had sealed itself, I wonder?
What kind of test did she do?
You had mentioned you woke up in a pool of
blood, that may have indicated your cervix
was dilating - or that would be my
personal fear anyway - as miscarriage at
13 weeks is generally quit painful and a
closed uterus would not let anything pass
through it.
Did she give you a level 2 u/s or a
vaginal ultrasound (your second doctor,
not your first)? Also, you have every
right to any photo taken during your 7
week ultrasound. It would be inside your
file at your first doctor's office. It
could help your 2nd doctor to better
identify what actually did happen to you
and I would demand it immediately -
considering your situation.
Good luck.

About three hours after I ruptured, I went
to the regular ob and he gave me those two
tests: the fern test (name?) and another
one that test for amniotic fluid. Both
were positive. That doc dx me with prom
and the other doc looked at all the
evidence and didn't change my label...She
continued the dx but it was with her I
asked if my dx was prom. So, I guess she
didn't first give me that dx. When I was
with her, she did the same two tests and I
wasn't leaking at the time. You don't
have to leak all the time to still have
prom, unfortunetly.
Since I wasn't leaking and I hadn't leaked
that I know of for at least two weeks, she
did do a vaginal ultrasound. The quality
of that ultrasound is a lot better. Is
there such a thing as a level ii vaginal
ultrasound??? If it wasn't a level ii
ultrasound, I will be upset. After all of
this happening....They should give me a
dang good ultrasound!!!
They did have pictures of my first
ultrasound. I have a copy of the first
one. The quality is horrible. When I
went into the specialist, my cervix wasn't
dilated at all and my placenta was "good
and long". I have no idea if I was open
when all this happened initially. I asked
the specialist and she said the notes
don't say anything about my cervix after
all of that happened. The notes, I guess
weren't that good.
I asked why I didn't have pain when I
ruptured, had some blood and passed
something and both doctors said some
people actually don't have much pain. I
still don't get this point at all. Also,
your point makes sense about having a
closed cervix and it would be extremely
painful for things to pass. So, I would
assume my cervix was wide open - with no
pain. My regular ob should have told me
that. I was in pain for a few days after
that, which he did say could have been the
start of premature labor. Again, he
didn't believe it was a twin.
If I was having any pain, I would have
felt it. My pain tolerance is so dang
low. I needed strong pain killers for
menstral cramps for several years and
needed three epidurals with my first
child. Pain medication rarely works for
me. I will never have answers as I didn't
save the thing I passed. It was
definitely like tissue but it wasn't
formed.
So, I won't have any answers regarding the
whole 'was it a twin, wasn't it" issue.
I do know who to go to if I need help in
being a better advocate - you.
As for waking up in a pool of blood, it
was actually really watery-like. It
wasn't pure blood so to speak. It was
some blood mixed with a lot of water. At
first, I though I had peed my pants until
I saw the blood. It's a scary feeling as
you very well know. At that time, I felt
like it wasn't really happening and I was
going to wake up any second. I am so
sorry for your loss. To loose a baby is
hard, period, but I feel it is even more
difficult when you feel you are out of the
woods with the whole chances of
miscarriage.
Times like right now, I am wondering if my
cervix is dilating because of some
extremely mild menstral-like cramping.
The same type of cramping I had right
after I leaked and passed something and I
had that cramping for two or three days.
I will just pray I make it until my monday
appt. I should ask for that dang level ii
ultrasound if I didn't get it.
If I didn't, why wouldn't the specialist
have given it to me?? Wouldn't my
situation prove I need one?? Now I am
upset by that.
