Anaesthesia And Iud Insertion?
Posted: 02-03-07 08:27am

Background:
i've been on hormonal birth control for five years and i've tried many different pills, including the nuvaring. While on the pill, i've had extreme breast tenderness, persistent migraines, dizziness, and moodiness. I'd reported this to different physicians over the years, only to be told that those are normal effects, and eventually I started to think of them as normal. Finally, in december, I went through a two week spell on the nuvaring where I would burst into tears even though I knew there was nothing wrong, and I started having blurred vision. I got off the pill immediately, and my problems have decreased dramatically. Now i'm looking at other bc options.

Now:
last year I tried to have a copper iud inserted at a local women's health clinic. It was so painful I couldn't complete the procedure, although they tried twice at my request. I'm 22, have not have children, and have no desire to ever have children.

This year, after going off the pill, trying the iud again seems like the only resonable choice for someone who wants to have a sex life and not get pregnant. The women's clinic said that they could insert the iud using a partial anaesthesia, probably valium.

I'm concerned because it hurt so badly last time, I can't help but worry about it being rejected after it's in. I've broken bones before and not gone into the doc for days, because i'd figured it'd hurt more if it was really broken. I've never experienced pain like that in my life! However, a friend of mine with no kids has one as says it's great.

I asked the doctor about my concerns, and her response was that it was no big deal, and she's only seen women who've had kids expel the device. That's so not what i've read online.

Another clinic I called said that they'd never even heard of getting an iud in while under sedation - my clinic says they do it all the time.

I'm feeling kind of backed into a corner, and my city is too small to have more than three or so places you can go to - and the clinic that said that they had never heard about sedation for an iud doesn't do any sedation in the clinic.

If anyone else has had this done, or knows anything that would help, i'd really appreciate it. Also, is there any aftercare that would help after iud insertion to minimize symptoms or reduce the likelihood of expulsion? Online sites just say you feel 'slight discomfort' and give statistics.

Any advice is really appreciated. And, as always, as difficult as this process has been, i'm glad I at least have choices. Smile

Maybe I can help =)

i have had 2 iud insertios, 1 mirena hormonal iud, and one copper iud. The mirena caused me problems, so I happily switched to the copper iud.

I had mirena inserted without even taking an ibuprofen, I called for a consult, and they happily inserted it asap! Yay, but it did hurt. I am pretty good with pain..

My copper iud insertion was painless, thanks to some drugs I used beforehand.

I took 7.5 of vicodin and valuim. That helped an awful lot!

Sedation or anesthesia during an iud insertion is not unheard of!

Do not be afraid to ask for what you want.

Thanks so much for the info! I'll ask the doc if I can have some pain drugs prescribed for after. It's very comforting to hear that the clinic isn't using me for a lab rat. Smile i'm really looking forward to getting the copper iud in (no more hormonal woes!) but I was very concerned when the other place said they'd never heard of it. Thanks again!

Any other recommendations for more-painfree iud maintenance and aftercare are welcome. Smile
