Please, Any Help Or Advice On Babies Constant Diareahha Posted: 02-05-07 06:29am
Hi
my son (11 weeks old) has been suffering
from severe diareahha for 10 days now with
no signs of a let up. He has gone from 1
solid (as expected) stool a day to 8 runny
poos (or one for every feed). His
temperature seams to vary from normal to
around 37.5 tops - but never for any real
length of time. He has had a stool test
for bacterial/viral infection and it came
back negative. It was then suggested it
could be a milk intollerence, so we
switched to soya which made no difference.
He is still feeding pretty well 900 -
1000ml a day so hydration will hopefully
not be a problem, but he is noticably
fussier when feeding and also in his all
round mood, crying a bit more and sleeping
a bit more during the day.
With all the test performed i'm not sure
who to turn to now for help. I was
wondering if anyboby knowns whether stool
tests are an accurate test for virus' and
infections - do they sometimes/quite often
miss something for whatever reason? I ask
this because he does have all the symptoms
of an infection - how long can it take an
11 week old to shake of a bug as 10 days
seems a long time to me. Also, if anyboby
else has any other knowledge or similiar
experiences please let me know. I'm a
first time father and very worried so I
apologise if this appears trivial.
Thanks for your time

This isn't trivial, this is serious. I
don't think he should have had it for more
than 2-4 days if he was sick. Also, if
his poo isn't normal, then his liquid
intake shouldn't be normal either.
Meaning, if he is losing all the liquid
he's taking in, you've got to give him
more liquid. Feed him a bottle of
pediasure everyday in addition to the food
he's getting now.
