What constitutes as having a high needs
child?
Kia I know you locked the post so please
don’t' hate me but I was just wondering.
I am not trying to start an argument.
This isn’t' about reading a book or how
to take care of a child in any way but I
was just wondering the difference between
a baby and a high needs baby. As far as
I am concerned .Amelia was a great baby.
Doesn’t' cry much, but when she wasn't
breathing correctly, or when she would
turn blue, when she had monitors on her,
when we were going back and forth to the
dr's and the cardiologist every other
week, when she got .R.S.V, she wasn’t' a
normal baby. Does that make her a high
needs baby? I just don't know.
I am not trying to sound stupid or
ignorant so keep those comments to
yourself.

All I picture when I hear 'high needs
baby' is a baby with a disorder or disease
of some kind...I'm not trying to sound
stupid or ignorant either but that's just
my thoughts..I was wondering the same
thing tho.

My Understanding...

Sunflower, my take on "high needs" is not
so much medical issues, but emotional.
Kids that constantly need to be held or
played with (no independence) are
considered high needs. It's more along
the lines of "high maintenence". That's
my take on it for what it's worth.

A high needs child is when the parent(s)
have to open a book for every little
problem they have......I dont know I am
just guessing

Sometimes a baby can be considered high
needs because of an underlying medical
issue. To me it seems more like a
euphemism for babies that are constantly
crying for no discernible reason.

i guess I think of that as 'special
needs'. To me 'high needs' sounds like a
nicer way of saying 'high maintenance'.

Hi..I know you don't know me, but i've
been one of the lurkers for a while...I
thought i'd try and answer your question
with what I always thought to be a "high"
needs or "special" needs child/baby
is..Anyway, I think it's a baby/child who
needs long-term, somewhat more specialized
care for some mental, physical,
psychological type issues...Whether the
child is mentally disabled or has a
physical issue/psychological issue that
will be present for a long time and
doesn't respond as say, a non-special
needs child would..If that makes any
sense...I have a son who is bipolar and
adhd..Definitely special needs...And was a
very high needs baby as well, though we
didn't know the problem at the time..If
that makes any sense?

My best friend had a little girl back in
.June & she (the baby) has had 2 open
heart surgeries & has to take all
kinds of different meds everyday...I think
I would consider her 'high needs' just for
the fact of all the meds she has to be
on...

Alyvia is absolutely a high needs baby.
She's perfect in her development, but
she's extremely reliant on us emotionally
and she takes a lot of work. *sigh* my
little drama queen definitely a high
maintenance woman!

Anyone with a high needs baby gets tons of
respect for me. I think i'd go insane...
Chu's so mellow and i'm soooooo
grateful. I will thank god everyday for
not giving me a high needs baby. I'm too
laid back for that.

High needs and high maintanence are the
same thing.
My son has reflux and is allergic to milk
and soy. Doctors were telling me nothing
was wrong with him and put him on
alimnetum which did nothing. And by the
time I found a doctor all the way in
missouri that would actually listen to me,
by that time my son was so miserable that
he had developed a :high needs
personality" how you can blame him....He
was in pain for so long and nothing was
being done about it.
Anyway, a lot of reflux babies are high
needs anyway, because of the discomfort,
they like to be held a lot. Almost
eveyrone I talk to on the infantreflux.
Org site has a high needs baby.

Tigresacanela24 - you'd be really
surprised what you'd be able to handle
with a high needs infant...M first born
was extremely mellow as well...Almost like
I was kind of spoiled...Then came along
his brother...I was terrified when I got
pregnant with the 3rd..Haha...Anyway, it's
not terrible..You just find a way to
adjust.. :d

mm hmm. I definitely get frustrated with
her after a while, like last night. Her
daddy worked from 8 to 5, came home and
wanted to unwind before taking her. By
the time he agreed to take her, she was
sleepy and only wanted .Mommy holding her.
She literally screamed until I came and
took her back. My arms, back, and neck
were aching so badly and I would have paid
a thousand dollars for an hour of peace,
but there you go. She wasn't having any
of it.
I just try to remind myself over and over
that she doesn't understand why .Mommy
won't hold her, that she feels safest with
me, and she's not being "bad" on purpose.
When I get super-frustrated I hand her to
her daddy regardless of her screaming and
walk out of the room until I calm down.
And I try to understand her, instead of
just looking at what's in front of me: a
screaming baby. I try to picture what
it's like to want your mother so badly
you'd scream and have tears pouring down
your face. That usually cures me of any
ill will towards her.
She is what she is, you know? And I love
her. As long as she's feeling safe and
comforted, .I'll manage with everything
else.

Amelia demands all my attention when we
are at home. I can't hardly do anything
at this point unless I am sitting right in
front of her talking to her but I don't
consider that 'high needs.' I just guess
it changes with every parent thinking that
their child is high needs. I dont' give
in to her. I think that I have changed
her from being a really high needs child
to making her independent. Unless she is
tired then it goes down the drain.
