Q: Will I transmit HPV-infection to baby during delivery? C-sec
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 6th, 2007
I am concered about my unborn child. A couple of years ago I went to the womans clinic, i had noticed small bumps around my private area. I was told the it was HPV and was commonly known. They removed them and since then i have not had any problems up until about two months ago. I was told that these spots usually go away on their own so I have not bothered going back to the womans clinic. I have the same partner that i have had for 7 years. But i am beyond sick with worry that my unborn child will be infected. Is there anything i can do to prevent this from happening can i request a c-section? Please please help me

A pregnant woman with a genital HPV-infection (genital warts) can infect her baby during delivery. This event is very rare, but possible. A C-section can prevent the transmission of the infection during delivery. You should treat your genital warts to prevent complications during pregnancy (bleeding and bacterial super-infections). The following treatments are safe for a pregnant woman with genital warts:
1. Trichloroacetic acid and bichloroacetic acid;
2. Cryotherapy;
3. Laser therapy;
4. Loop electrosurgical excision, and
5. Surgical removal by electrocautery or excision.
You may seek counsel from your obstetrician or gynecologist.
