The gallbladder serves as a reserve keeper
of bile produced by the liver. When
stimulated, the gallbladder pushes the
stored bile into the duodenum. Gallbladder
contractions are stimulated by local
hormones such as cholecystokinin, gastrin,
cecretin etc. These hormones are produced
by the cells of the duodenum and stomach
as food enters the organs. Biliary salts
from bile are important for digesting fats
in the food. A HIDA-scan is used to
calculate the ejection fraction of the
gallbladder after stimulation by the
hormone cholecystokinin. Less than 35% is
considered an abnormal ejection fraction.
People with abnormal ejection fractions
that have already excluded possible
organic disorders of the gallbladder
(cholecystitis, gallstones, tumors…) are
diagnosed with "biliary dyskinesia".
Biliary dyskinesia is a functional biliary
disorder wherein the gallbladder produces
painfully ineffective contractions in
order to push the bile into the duodenum.
During biliary dyskinesia, the rest of the
bile stays in the gallbladder. This
condition is treated with a gallbladder
removal.
