Is Long-term Pill Use Bad?????????

I have heard that you should not be on the pill for more than 3 years in a row, and then should take a break. I asked my doctor recently and she said it is not true. However, i've learned that different doctors say different things. What do have you heard on this subject?

I work for planned parenthood, and have a special interest and education in womens health.

It is not dangerous to be on the pills for years!

Many women, my own mother included, was on the pills for many many years..

And she was on the highest dose versions too.

All the pill does is stop ovulation, which is not dangerous at all, and can be especially beneficial for women with cysts.

There are no problems with future fertility? My husband and I would like to start trying to conceive in a year or so, and I am just worried about being on the pill this long. Also, does anyone know how long to get off the pill before you start trying to conceive?

As soon as you stop the pill, you can ovulate the very next week!

That is why women who miss pills end up pregnant!

The pill does not affect future fertility.

The people in the getting pregnant forum would so disagree with you. Medical research does state that it normally takes 2-3 cycles for your body to regulate everything. It is possible to get pregnant the first month though. I know people who have.

the range of fertility stated by these women and by carifairy is based off of each individual woman's cycle. Carifairy stated the soonest the body could ovulate, but obviously it could take longer. Neither answer is wrong.

Yeah, I can speak from experience. I got pregnant within the first month of being off the pill.

thanks for this because one of the reasons I am on the pill is for cysts and I have been on it for years.

There is actually a new pill coming out that will be a whole year long! Random spotting will occour, but this is the first long-term pill, and it is very safe.

The reason that I began using birth control in the first place was to control painful functional cysts. I have been on either the pill or the shot for the last 6 years. This is my first month off any type of birth control. I think it gets that stigma because, let me tell you, i am *not* having fun. You get use to the lighter shorter periods than *bam* you find out what it is like for the rest of the world. My doctor told me that I could easily conceive my first cycle off. It really is up to the individual.
