Red Itchy Swollen Eyelids

Sometime ago, someone posted a question about a condition in which they suffered from chronic red, itchy, flaky, swollen (yes-really ugly)eyelids. I had the same condition intermittently myself. I am not a physician, but did some research, and found that seborrheic dermatitis could be the culprit. The condition is related apparently to yeast in your system. If you suspect this, you can have a yeast count performed by your physician. Even if there is no yeast growth, you may lack some beneficial bacteria called lactobacillus species & bifidobaterium.

I think your post may have been deleted/purged, but if you're still out there suffering with this condition and have not found something that works with the help of your physician (or feel like you're being treated for an improper diagnosis), here are some ideas that have worked for others. There is a shampoo (and a cream) called nizoral that worked for me. I believe you can get both at walgreen's. I suffered intermittently for years from the condition, which usually worsened in the winter. Be careful not to get it in your eyes. I applied the shampoo to my eyelids with eyes shut tight, left on for one minute, and rinsed thoroughly. I did this 3 times over two days, and the condition cleared up completely.

I have heard others have had success with one-pill dose of the pill difulcan (used to treat yeast "infections") . Another natural remedy that has worked for people is acidophilus (you can get at the health food store - 30 pills for about $14). There is an otc product too, called acidophilus pearls (by enzymatic therapy) that can work if its a yeast related condition. Many yogurts also contain acidophilus, so you may want to include in your diet.

Remember that other conditions can cause similar symptoms, including herpes simplex I virus (the same virus that 97% of us carry and that causes cold sores), and blepharitis can have similar symptoms. Good luck and god bless your health!

Nizoral shampoo worked. I never found the cream. washed entire eye area morning & evening for a week, itching and burning stopped almost immediately. It is taking a while longer for skin to return to its previous appearance -- soft & smooth. Also, washed all my makeup brushes and threw away a LOT of eyemakeup.
