Normal Fetal Heartrate?
Posted: 02-14-07 02:09am

Ok, I asked this before but now I found out the normal heartbeat for the baby is 120-160. Well, I got my first ultrasound at 9 weeks and they said it was 178. Does that mean my baby doesnt have a normal heartbeat because its over 160? Im confused.

I'm sure the sonographer would have commented if the heart rate was abnormal. It's best if you ask these questions at the time of your appointments, that's what the professionals are there for!

The heartbeat is fast in the beginning and it will slow down as the pregnancy progresses.

I first heard my baby's at 9 weeks and it was 175. My sister-in-law just heard her baby's and it was 170.

It's totally normal.

It's faster the earlier the fetus if i'm not mistaken then it gradually drops a bit.

How is it you and your best friend are pregnant at the same time but know nothing about pregnancy?? Did you guys plan this together or something??

The baby's heartbeat drops. I told you that once already when you had this concern. You can look it up anywhere.

Wasn't your appointment on the 12th? You should make a running list of everything you want to ask your doctor at your monthly appointments so you don't forget.

lol. No! I dont know how it happened. It was weird because she found out I was pregnant first and a few days later she said shes pregnant. She lives 4 hours away from me so we couldnt have planned it. I know a few things about pregnancy because I got bunches of magazines and my mom sent me a book called what to expect when your expecting. She doesnt have any books so I read up on a lot of stuff.

yeah, he heard the babys heartbeat and he said its normal for the baby's heartbeat to be faster than usual because its only a few months but he said it will slow down as the pregnancy progesses. But then I heard on here that the normal heartbeat is 120-160 and I got concerned and thought the doctor wasnt telling me something I should know. But, im having another u/s in april to see what gender my baby is and ill know what the heartbeat is then.

Well, I work on the pediatrics floor at our hospital and all the alarms on the machines that monitor pulses and oxygen saturation don't even go off until they hit 201. The average heart rate for an infant is 120-160, although neonates tend to go more between 160 and 180, especially when they are angry or during any time of high excitement. Trust me, I see plenty times of high excitement in the hospital when we bring the needles out. Just as your doctor said, as your baby grows the heart rate will begin to lower. It's very normal. We don't start calling docs until they hit 200 less a few most of the time unless there is some underlying condition (which is not often). I know it's hard not to worry but just try to stay relaxed and make lists for your doctor visits.

do you not go to the doctor monthly? You should be able to hear the heartbeat at every appointment.

not that it matters but just because you live 4 hours from each other doesn't mean you couldn't have planned it. Laughing

.That's what I was thinking, .B.. But at my appointments, although I *do* get to hear the heartbeat everytime, my doctor doesn't measure how fast its going. She said she'd only be concerned if it sounded abnormal. So I get to hear it, but .I've only ever known of .Gabe's heartrate when I had my ultrasounds.

really? The dopplers my docs used had the rate right on it digitally and they always recorded it in my file and told me what it was.

.The one my doctor always uses doesn't have a digital reading! How weird.

i'm sure it's not written in stone that you have to hear the heartbeat every time but I was under the impression that it was an important part of your check-ups?
Any who even if he doesn't listen to it every time, i'm sure if you requested it he'd let you! That's my favorite part of my monthly appointment's!

.I figured it was a really important part of checkups, too. That's all that really ever happens at my appointments. She measures my uterus & listens to his heartbeat, asks me if I have any questions, & then .I'm good to go.

same. I'm still pretty early, but my first ob I had that unpleasant checkup, but every other check-up we've discussed my general health and listened to the heartbeat.
