Chronic Diarrhea In 10 Y/o Posted: 02-18-07 01:57am
My 10 y/o son with no history of digestive
issues started having diarrhea over a
month ago. 2 wks after the onset, I took
him to the pediatrician. All stool
samples for parasites, bacteria, and blood
are negative. He continues to have
diarrhea (sometimes he cannot make it to
the bathroom) so had numerous blood tests
this wk. All were negative except his
protein was low. He also had an
ultrasound and his organs looked
normal...Only abnormal findings were his
lympnodes in the abdomen were enlarged and
there was fluid in his abdomen. His
pediatrician is at a loss as to what's
going on and we see a gastro. Specialist
last next week.
I have him on a bland diet and no dairy to
"settle" his stomach and for the most part
is not in pain, with cramping once in
awhile. Again, he has never had diarrhea
or vomitting issues.
Thanks!

There's a possibility it could be caused
by an allergy or a hypersensitivity to
food.................Or thinking deeper it
could be an allergy to anything in the
environment. Has he tried a new food or
different brand? One child I know had
severe allergic reactions and the parents
were at a loss as to what was causing his
pain(diarrhea too).................Turns
out the school he attended was using a new
cleaning product to clean their floors!
It may take a while to pin point the
culprit..........That is, if it is an
allergic reaction............In the mean
time you can concentrate on boosting his
immune system......................Don't
disregard the so-called "good foods" my
own son is allergic to bananas and
ginger..........Always considered them
good foods but if his body treats them
like foreign invaders........It's like
poison to him.........................Just
a thought

I appreciate the feedback. My concern, as
is the pedi's, is that the diarrhea is a
symptom of something else going on. His
globulin (protein) is abnormal and there
is fluid in his abdomon, and his
lymphnodes in his abdomon are enlarged
(ultrasound finding).

Has he been tested for
lymphoma?..............I don't want to
scare you..........but I do believe in
getting earliest possible
treatment............but "medical"
treatment can't start until there is a
dx.............enlarged lymph nodes,fever,
weight loss and diarrhea( I believe) are
some of the symptoms..............also
while your waiting for further
tests...........research the family
tree..........you'd be amazed the
"secrets" and long forgotten
dx's............may point you in the right
direction...................still believe,
with a major boost to immune system will
help him recover..............you've
probably heard of these................but
do you know what they are designed to do?
Coenzyme Q10..........improves cellular
oxygenation
DMG...............a personal
favourite.........enhances oxygen
utilization
Garlic..............increases immune
function
Beta carotene.............helps cells
repair and rebuild
The omegas..............repair and produce
new cells
I do believe in medical
science...............however there's alot
we can do for ourselves............that
complements the medicine>GL<

Spirit; In the meantime while you wait to
get into the gastroenterologist try
feeding him some plain yogurt. The
bacteria in the yogurt can replace the
natural flora (bacteria) found in the
intestines. Sometimes loss of this
"natural bacteria" can cause diarrhea. We
can lose the "natural bacteria" after a
round of antibiotics for other infections.

Spirit,
Have been trying not to "freak" but
lymphoma crossed my mind too. Actually
did a symptom search with what he is
experiencing and lymphoma did come up. He
hasn't had any fevers, yet I was diagnosed
with cancer (not lymphoma) 2 yrs ago and
had no symptoms. Have tried plain yogurt.
The last few days he hasn't really eaten
much at all.
Thanks for all the advice and I WILL let
the dr know our family history as who
knows what seems insignificant to me, may
be the clue to solve what's going on.....

Lymphoma is probably the worst case
scenerio..............but something that
should be looked at if only to rule it
out................most likely it's
something that can be attended to, as
critical care RN said about the
yogurt..........although some cannot
tolerate any type of milk
product...............in that
case............as long as the round of
antibiotics are done..........it's time to
up the dose of "good
bacteria"...........this can be done with
lacto sporogenes..........in the
frigerated section of the health
store.............antibiotics aren't
particular........they'll destroy the good
and bad bacteria.......these capsules will
replace the billions lost...........give
him small meals.........so they're easier
to digest.......concentrate on repair
foods........eg) brown rice/lentils have
the DMG as I mentioned before in miniscle
amounts naturally in
them.............pineapple has
bromelain...........a natural anti
inflamatory agent etc
etc................all the best to you and
your son

Still Having Trouble? Posted: 04-18-07 09:15am
I just wondered if you are still there,
and if they have made a proper diagnosis
for your son?
