Does a person have to stay on medications
for the rest of their lives to keep the
signs of schizophrenia from coming back?

What a loaded question. In a word, yes.
Yes as in what the current understanding
of schizophrenia is and how it is created
biologically. Your meds may change over
time, but generally the most successful
schizophrenics maintain their medication.

your question is a very good a difficult
question to answer. I have schizophrenia
and have been on medication for 14 years.
It is very hard to imagine being on
medication for the rest of your life.
There is no cure for schizophrenia but
treatment. Yes, most likely you will have
to take medication for most of your life.

Thank you for your replies. My mom was
diagnosed two years ago with
schizophrenia. She took risperdal and it
helped her alot. She took it for about two
years. Her doctor started weaning her off
of it and now she is totally off of all
medicines. I am concerned that she could
have a relapse. thats why I had this
question to see if that possible.

He's wrong, there are plenty of cases of
people that are weened off medication and
do just fine. I know of one, actually.
She may do well to watch her diet as well,
as a poor diet can lead to a relapse.
