do i get them from a doctor? or can i purchase them from a store?

what's a good brand? are they safe? i don't remember my mother using them at all while she was pregnant with any of my 3 younger siblings. she still doesn't know, b/c i want to wait until i've reached at least 12-wk's, so i can't ask her for advice just yet.

i'm looking online, but i'd rather get answers from real people.

You need to take prenatal vitamins. You can get them from the store. Like walmart - they are pretty inexpensive.

I take prescription prenatals called PrimaCare.I handle them well and have not had any problem keeping them down. (im not pregnant so that is probably why Very Happy ) They are taken twice daily. There is a capsule in the morning and a tablet at night. It's taken that way so that your body can get the maximum absorbtion of all the vitamins. They also contain alot of omega's which are suppose to support healthy brain stem formation. There are alot of other pluses as well, i just can't think of them all. You can also go to any health store, ie GNC or something similar, and buy some over the counter that are very efficiant. Just make sure it has enough folic acid.

You can go into any grocery or drug store and get them. Then when you have your first appt with your OB he/she will let you know whether you should be taking something extra. I started taking OTC ones, which were good, but my doc said she wanted me taking extra Folic Acid, so she wrote me a script for them (Natatab .F.A). At first they made me a bit nauseous, but after a while I got used to them. I think some of the girls in here take Flinstone vitamins, so check with a doc to see
They are very safe and you should take them. Some women feel they are not necessary, but I seriously feel that anything you can do to promote health and growth in your baby you should do.

hi! my Dr told me when i had my morning sickness that as long as i had the extra folic acid early on that was most important. of course as soon as it was gone to start taking regular ones with all the vitamins. do you have an obgyn yet? if so they should be able to call in a prescription. but the drugstore ones are pretty much the same. just read the label so you know you are getting what you need! i think it is 1mg of folic acid recommended daily.

IT's the iron in most prenatals that make people sick. I had to take prenatals without iron and then take iron supplements later on in pregnancy.

I bought mine at Walmart and took some extra folic acid. Most prenatals are the same thing with diff names.

you can always ask the pharmacist.

my prenatals were waaay too huge & heavy for me to swallow. my doctor told me to just take .flintstones .vitamins! so i take those, a calcium supplement (my doctor recommended .tums with extra .calcium- great for helping with heartburn, too!), & an extra folic acid supplement!

Be careful what multivitamins you take!!

Vitamin supplements taken for pregnancy are fine, however 'general' multivitamins can contain too much vitamin 'A' which 'can' be harmful to your baby. Food contains vitamin A, however this is in the form of beta carotene which is harmless. Just be careful not to take too much manufactured vitamin A.

If you are unsure check the label as in the UK we have a warning sign on some of our general multivitamin packs for pregnant women advising not to take them. We have a good pregnancy supplement called pregnacare which is great and has the correct RDA for everything you need but does not contain vitamin a.
