Extreme Sensitivity of the Head of My Penis
Posted: 02-19-07 14:16pm

I'm about to describe a very rare and disabling problem that I've had for many years... and I'm 20 years old now.

At about the age of 8, as accurately as I can remember, I started noticing that the head (tip) of my penis started becoming very sensitive to touch/fabrics/materials/etc. At that point I was not circumcised and neither I am now (and I won't be able to get circumcised as you get to read a more about the problem below).

Over the years the sensitivity has become 'hypersensitivity' and now I cannot touch the tip of my penis without experiencing extreme pain - and in which case, I immediately stop touching. The only times I touch it is when I wash myself in the shower but I cannot touch it at any other time. It is not pain sensitive to water, but it definitely is sensitive to the slightest bit of change in water temperature - so that means that the water must be perfect each time. There is no pain when the tip is covered by the foreskin, but when it becomes exposed - that's when it cannot be touched.

In the past, I had a problem where the foreskin would not retract all the way back like it normally should, and I had surgeons try to cut it loose so that it would retract back (I was about 5 years old then), but they failed the first time. The second time it was done was when I was 8 years old and they succeeded but that's when I started feeling the sensitivity to increase.

I have not been able to have sex due to this problem because the pain I get from a simple touch is not even worth trying.

I have tried all kinds of anti-bacterial, anti-fungual, senstivity-removing, and repairing creams - all with no help. I tried all kinds of medication and that did not help either. I went to the best urological center in Canada and they told me that my problem is not urology related, but most likely psychologically related. They explained that when the foreskin doesn't retract in young boys, they just circumcise them, but the procedure that they did on me most likely has caused a traumatic disorder and damaged nerve endings in my tip. I've been to a psychiatrist and he said that I have a hypersensitivity pain disorder that is most likely coming from my Aspergers syndrome diagnosis, and that progressive desensitizing exercises would help. I have followed those exercises religiously, all to have no success with them whatsoever.

Any ideas? This problem is actually making me QUITE depressed, and I will do ANYTHING it takes to get that hypersensitivity to go away. Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

God, why is it that every time something is somewhat mysterious doctors like to call it psychological? Seriously, this needs to stop sometime. Anyway, I would say it seems to me something is restricting blood flow or putting pressure onto the nerve centers responsible for feeling in the glans. Question though, what is it like just walking around, sitting and so forth? Any pain then?

Well like I said, as long as the head is covered by the foreskin - it feels completely fine and normal. I can walk, run, sit, and not feel anything. But as soon as the head becomes exposed - it's JUST the head (the glands) that have the extreme pain sensitivity. I think you might be right that the nerves might be damaged in the glands, and in which case... what can be done to fix that?

Thanks for helping!

perhaps seeing a neurologist may help...

OK, I will schedule a neurologist.

I've been wondering about something though... maybe it could be the source of the pain:

When I had the surgical procedure done to release the foreskin from being 'glued' to the glands - could they have damaged my nerve endings by cutting the flesh of the foreskin from the glands themselves? I have a feeling that it's a problem with my nerves just in that particular area due to that operation...

Question

Oh and one other possibility is that I have Aspergers syndrome and if that's the case, then one of those hypersensitivities in my condition then happens to be on the tip of my penis.

So if in the above case - what would I be able to do to fix that?

I've got the same problem.

I always thought that I was unable to retract my foreskin because I hadn't matured entirely, but being 18 years of age I've started to raise an eyebrow. Especially after an incident where I was extremely intoxicated, and in recieving a hand job, had my skin pulled back entirely - with MUCH pain involved, thank christ I had a bottle of vodka that night. I went on to have sex - with a whole ton of dulled out by alcohol pain. Recently I've been stretching my foreskin and finding a strong buildup of smegma. With the extreme sensitivity I'm feeling on my glans, its very uncomfortable to retract at all.

Tonight I managed to retract my foreskin entirely. Huge accomplishment in my books hahaha. Though to my horror I found a whole ton of hardend smegma, just freaking chunks of it covering the end of the glans, towards the shaft. So at the back of my head there was a ton of nasty smegma. I hopped in the shower immediately and started cleaning - painful as all hell; so I sat in the bath and let it soak. I shook a lot off, but some of it was just stuck, so I slowly picked away, painful as hell.

Now I've got all the big peices taken care of, but the problem is, there is still a layer of just small stuff. And that is painful as hell to touch.

I'm really looking for some sort've cure or treatment or something - I've been working at this on my own as it is extremely embarassing, but if there is a sure fire way of stopping this - I'd be willing to come out with it and see a doctor.

A good friend of mine has this problem (im a agony aunt for all my mates when it comes to stuff like this lol). He tried stretching his forskin everyday whilest using a numbing gel. It seem to help well and he was able after a month or so clean himself ok etc. His forskin is still tight and im urging him to a doctor as circumsision will resolve this and in time the head of the penis does harden up and become less sensative. For example. When i 1st became sexually active my clit was so sensative it actually hurt to touch. After touching myself etc everything day and increasing the pressure i can now touch my clit no prob and its now pleasurable. So persaverance, patients and a good numbing cream like anal gel etc. The head is always the most sensative part anyway.

I figured it would sort've die down eventually over time. Thing is - when I pulled it back and let it dry up a bit, the head lost a lot of sensitivity, so I'm thinking letting it air up a bit would help. also where can i find some numbing gel? it burns like fire to touch.

I also agree that it burns like fire to touch. I tried all kinds of desensitizing techniques for a long period of time but they didn't help at all...

I think the problem lies in the fact that the surgical procedure I had done had damaged the nerve endings and tissues on the tip - and that is why they are responding with unbelievable pain.

I will keep on trying things and if someone works - I will make a post here.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Let's all try to figure out what we can do... this can't be affecting us for the rest of our lives.

Well I was able to pull the foreskin back on my own for the very first time just two days ago. I've cleaned religiously since then and I'm noticing its becoming easier and easier to pull it back, but the level of sensitivity is relatively the same. I have noticed however that the very tip of my glans is starting to ease up. I was able to just touch it today and it was almost numb to touch.

I'm moving slowly and staying positive - I figure the sensitivity isn't going to be too much for too long - I'll eventually lose the insane sensitivity soon. It reminds me of touching VERY raw skin, so I'm guessing thats all it is. Just needs a little more exposure.

Well i found the cheapest place for the numbing gel is ebay. usually anal desensatising gel is fine actually. If not a site like lovehoney etc will sell it and any sex shop really.
Yes air will help harden you up a bit, its just taking time getting used to it. My clit wasnt as bad but it did hurt like hell especialy when i chaffed against cloths etc or even sat down sometimes! I hope it works for you. Just keep at it and let me know how it goes. As said i sorted my mates prob. Because of his sensativity he was still a virgin at 25 and had never had a girlfriend because of it. Now hes much happier! lol.

Hi, everyone! I also have the same problem, at least I think it is the same, and I registered here to get some advice about it. First of all, I would like to apologise for my not-so-perfect English, it's not my mother tongue and I'm still learning it.

I'm 18 years old. I'm uncircumcised, and I have this problem since I can remember, but when I was a kid, I didn't pay attention to it, because I thought it was normal and that it would disappear when I grow up. But, it's the same now... I'm virgin and I'm afraid how will my future girlfriend respond to this problem...

I also have a fordyce condition, and before I had self-diagnosed it, I thought it was the reason for this hypersensitivity. But, I found out on the internet that fordyce condition is common and harmless.
About the sensitivity of the head, it hurts when I rub it, but not when I just press it with my finger and do not move it. It hurts when I separate my finger from the head. Is it the same with you, guys?
When I masturbate, of course, with my foreskin over the head, it doesn't hurt at all.

I'm very happy to have found this forum. I have already searched the whole net about this problem and I haven't found anything...
I hope that we will get rid of our problem...

Hi Tony_ld - thanks for sharing your problem. What you described sounds exactly the same as my problem.

I was just recently diagnosed and they said that such a problem most likely is caused by trauma of some sort, and it is called "dynia". The word dynia itself just means pain, so in order to describe pain on the tip of the penis, you would have to add the word glans (head of penis) + dynia... so most likely it is called glansdynia. I couldn't find anything on glansdynia, but I found the exact same problem in females - called vulvodynia:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulvodynia

I was given Amitryptiline and a topical cream called Xylocaine. We'll see how this works out...
