First Time to the Doctor

I have been dealing with extreme mood
swings for as long as I can remember.
The worst is the irritability and
frustration. Everything seems to drive
me crazy and I get mad about ridiculous
things. I also think I might suffer from
social anxiety. I don't ever want to go
anywhere but home, I don't make friends
easily because I feel i'll say something
stupid and so it takes a long time for me
to feel comfortable with someone.
My point is, I know I need to go to the
doctor, however I can't seem to make
myself do it because I am scared of what
the doctor might think about me etc. How
long did it take for you to go to the
doctor for the first time and how bad did
it get before you did? Was it as bad as
you thought it was going to be?

Hi there. I just wanted to let you know
that you are not alone. I too get really
mad about the most ridiculous things.
It's weird because I know I am totally off
the wall for getting upset about such
silly things but I can't seem to help it.
I also have trouble making new friends. I
used to have tons of friends and was a
very social person. But for the last few
years it seems like I have become
extremely shy and afraid of what people
think of me. I do not know why I do this
since I was never like that when I was
younger. However, please do not feel
afraid or intimidated or even embarassed
to go and speak with a doctor. Trust me,
I would go but unfortunately I do not have
health insurance and I can't afford it
since I am a college student. Therapists
will not judge you or make you feel like
you are "crazy" for feeling that way.
This problem is much more common than you
may think. They are just there to help
you sort out your problems and get back on
track. You have nothing to lose and
everything to gain. Why wait until it
gets worse before it gets better? Good
luck.

you are not alone. The answer for me was
cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt). Read
my favorite starter book on cbt is "been
there, done that? Do this! By sam obitz
(www.Tao3.Com) once you learn the tools in
cbt you have them forever so you are able
to give yourself relief almost instantly
whenever you are feeling stressed, anxious
or down. It's all about using the tools
to learn to think more clearly and
accurately about things and once you do
your stress, anxiety, panic and depression
will miraculously begin to lift before
your eyes. Like anything in life the more
you put in the more you get out of cbt.
When you are ready it would be a good idea
to get involved in a cbt group too.

hi dawndid-
many colleges have free services and often
cbt groups that you can attend so I would
recommend checking with yours. Even
non-students can get into most cbt
programs run through universities for
little or no charge :d
good luck!

It took me a little while to go to the
doctor simply because I did not realize I
had anxiety. I thought I had stomach and
heart problems. But, when I did realize
what it was, I went straight to my doctor.
I know that you feel silly or maybe even
"crazy" but there are soooooo very many
people who suffer from anxiety. Talk to
your doctor, trust me it will help. And
if your doctor does make you feel silly or
stupid, switch doctors. There will be
one out there who will listen and
understand and not judge you. Your post
was kind of old, so I am not sure if you
will even check this, but like the other
posts said, you are definately not alone!
Just remember that.

I've suffered all these for years, I
eventually started seeking help via the
medical profession all useless, meds
didn't work nor did therapy or counselling
even stayed in a psych hospital for 3
months few years back in the hope that
that might be of use but no!!
Now I am going to try cbt, but I have also
found that certain natural therapies are
far more useful than any drugs i've ever
been given. Check out 5htp(tryptophan),
sam-e, vitamin b's, dhea, also
yoga&/or pilates, relaxation,
meditation.
If like me you have kids, try &
"programme" your time so that ou get a
break from them & their demands
regularly (my kids won't let me but some
kids do) this might help.

you're definately not alone with that. I
used to be the same way, still am to some
degree. I took a speech class at school,
which helped a lot. We had to get in
front of the class and give speeches
ranging from 5 to 10 minutes. It was so
lame going through it, but it was worth
every minute now that I look back.
As for the doc, like everyone else has
said, they won't judge you or think
anything bad about you. Believe me, they
see people who have problems you wouldn't
believe. Don't be ashamed to go either.
I finally got to go today (for anxiety
and worry) after a month of waiting.
Just remember, becoming angry with little
things ( I do it too ) just puts that much
more stress on your body.

Purple, that's great that you are going to
give cbt a try! I hope you have similar
success to what I am experiencing with it
 it is difficult at
first but once I started to 'get it' it
has gotten easier and easier to do and is
helping me more and more. We're using the
obitz book in my group that qt3 mentioned
(i got it right this time del hehe) and
it's real short and simple.

The book "been there, done that? Do
this!" is a great book- there is something
very different about it in comparison to
any other book i've read on the subject.

hi misterlighthouse-
i think the obitz book is more down to
earth than most of the books on the
subject as opposed to clinical making it
easier to absorb the message and less
confusing take care
