I am 33, will be 34 next month. No
children, would like them eventually. I
ride mountain bikes on a regular basis, as
well as do races. I also road ride and
lift weights when I can.
I have a family history of Osteoporosis,
father, mother, grandparents, etc. I was
having some gyn female issues (no menstral
for 6months) so my physician did a bone
scan on me. Turns out I have Osteopenia.
My T-scale is -2.0 which -2.5 is
Osteoporosis. My lumbar spine was at 80%!
and my lower legs at 94%, uppers at 97%,
etc. So my physician did the blood test as
well. Turns out my Vitamin D is at 16.2
(normal range is 32.0-100) anything under
25 is critical I've read...My Carbon
Dioxide was low too? 18. Everything else
on the labs were normal however some
kidney stuff was on the high end of
normal. I have passed a kidney stone last
year and currently still have one.
I also have noticed that my fingernail
beds (the whites of your nail bed) are
growing. If that makes sense. What is that
a lack of?
My question is this. I have not seen an
endocrinologist yet and might not be able
to get in till May.
My question is is this reversable? Can I
become "normal" like most 33 year old
females? I'm actually scared.
Any feed back is helpful for I do not know
anything about this.

loviedovie; To my knowledge there is only
one drug that can reverse the effects of
Osteoporosis. The name escapes me right
now. But it's still in the trial phase so
most insurances will not pay for it. It is
in the form of an injection and very
expensive. Other meds only help control
the amount of bone loss. A good diet and
moderate exercise also help control bone
loss. As far as your electrolyte
imbalances your endrocrineologist will
have the best answers for you b/c he can
evaluate all you lab values together.

Thanks. I won't be able to see an
Endocrinologist till May so I'm just going
to stock up on Viactiv chewables, Choch
milk and hope for the best.
