Not Eating Solids
Posted: 02-28-07 18:41pm

hey all, well, im worried. landon was eating solids (rice cereal) at 4 months because the doctor said he was ready, and he ate it for about a month ( he liked it kinda runny) and then after taht he had no interest in it. and so now( he'll be 6 months on sunday Smile ) i tried giving him sweet potatoes last nite and he ate a few tsp. and then this morning and after noon nothing, so i tried adding a bit of water to make it runny kinda and nothing, and i tried the rice cereal with banana and nothing..her just spits most of it out and turns his head and if i keep persisting he gets a bit cranky and as soon as i stop hes all happy...should i be worried? Im just kinda confused and scared that i did something or is he just not ready?

Hmm, how old is he?

If he's been eating it for about a month now then he should be fine, does it agree with his tummy? does he get constipated? What kind of babyfood do you feed him? Maybe he's just getting tired of the same stuff. I know .oni started solids early like stage 2 and stuff so maybe you need to send .sarah a message. I think .sarah mentioned that oni was ready for solids pretty early and did really well with it.

My son started hating his babyfood at like 7 1/2 months and then he started eating what i eat like macaroni & cheese, corn, green beans, etc.

Alyvia loves cereal but hates fruits/veggies, so I feel your pain kind of. I have to mix a few spoons of her stage 1 foods in with her cereal to get her to eat it at all, and if it tastes too strongly like the food (green beans or bananas, whatever) she refuses the whole bowl.

I'm hoping it'll get better when she's ready for table food. Neutral

sounds like he is not really ready for solids. forcing them to eat when they arent ready can lead to all sorts of problems. my son wasnt interested in solids until 9 months. after i talked to many moms on other boards, turns out my son is perfectly normal. in my opinion, 4 months is wayyy to young for solids, especially since the american academy of pediatrics now recommends solids from 6- 8 months. and many babies arent even ready until 9-10 months.

Hey,

Well I've only posted a few times, but I can relate to what you are going through. I have 3 kids; an almost 9 yr old, almost 3 yr old and a 3month old. My older two kids absolutely detested baby food, but they loved fresh fruits and veggies. If you haven't yet tried it, I would suggest smashing some bananas yourself, make applesauce, etc... Maybe that would help, but if not I really wouldn't worry. He'll get the hang of new tastes sooner or later.

Good luck.

Some babies just don't want to eat solids. I really wouldn't worry about it yet. Solids are just for practice right now anyway...

i think u need to stop the runny thing..that is only necessary when they are 1st introduced...try giving it to him the proper way and keep trying because they spit out most foods at 1st..i dont believe in babies not being ready..u need to teach him how to eat..he doesnt know what he is ready for or not.

that is the most ridiculous thing [that I have heard]. research proves that babies cant even digest starches until 6 months old. i was just reading this except from the american academy of pediatrics. now the american academy of pediatrics recomends starting no sooner than 6-8 months. babies digestive systems have to mature. just like a baby is ready to sit, or stand, or roll over, a baby isnt ready for solids until they show you very specific cues that they want them; ei; opening mouth wide for spoon, grabbing at your food. if a baby clamps their mouth shut and turns away *obviously* they do not want any, this is their bodies way of showing you to slow down. i made a mistake of giving my son solids at 4 months to try it because thats what everyone told me to do, he was gassy and bloated and miserable, and i really regret it. his system was not ready for it. i dont see why everyone is in such a rush to start their baby on food.

I apologise if there were any non-negative posts from this point but to be honest I wasn't trawling through all the crap to save the ok bits.
