Q: Concerns With Prenatal Vitamins And Supplements

My husband and I have just started ttc. I have always had a very good diet so I haven't had to change much there. My concern is with my multivitamin...., when I started reading about pre-conception and pregnancy nutrition I read about birth defects associated with vitamin A and assumed that prenatal pills wouldn't contain Vitamin A,but they do?????Why is that?? If we can get adequate amounts of Vitamin A through our diets, why do vitamins, especially pre-natal vitamins even include it???
I talked to three different pharmacists and they said if I like my current multivitamin, stay on it, supplement with folic acid and increase my calcium. This is the most important info on my current multivitamin..... Vitamin A:1000 IU Beta-Carotene:3000 IU Folic Acid: 0.6mg Vitamin D:400 IU Calcium:200mg Iron:4mg
So I bought Folic acid (each pill is 1mg,??I believe)A chewable Calcium carbonate w/Vitamin D (600mg elemental and 200IU of Vit.D)
What's with all the Vitamin D?? I have read that we get enough through our diets. So my concern is not with LACK of nutrition, but the chance that I may get TOO MUCH of certain vitamins. Has anyone come across this before??

Its Alright
most vitamins need say to much vitamine a for a long period of time excluding beta-carotene...... so not counting carrots and vegetables. Vitamines are perfectly fine.... it give you just the right amount.... just watch other vitamin A containg product..... again, excluding beta- carotene. you have to take a lot for it to have an effect.

Oh Geez
ok I hate my computer, I type to fast, let me try this again...... Vitamins are totally safe if you take them the way they are suppose to be taken. They give you just the right amount. On most bottles they say Do not take an excessive amount of vitamin a for a long period excluding beta-carotene.... carrots are fine, and any vegetables containing vitamin A are fine....just watch other product containing vitamin a..... You have to take a lot for it to cause harmful affects.

Is there really any difference between pre-natal and my current vitamins though?? I'm curious to know if anyone has been given a similar recommendation?

look at the quantity of each vitamin in each supplement.

personally I'd rather take on e that is formulated for pregnancy during pregnancy.

excess vitamin a can cause birth defects.
you still need some vitamin a though.

vitamin d is a common vitamin to be lacking in. our bodies actually make it through exposure to sunlight. we get a limited amount from our diets.

the best person to speak to is your ob/gyn and see what s/he recommends for you.

you say you don't like changing your vitamin - you'll be changing a heck of a lot more than your vitamins once your babcy arrives - get ready for numerous changes now.

I think that it would be best to discuss this with your OBGYN before you start taking anything right off, and find out what is right for you.
