Help With Report On Infants
Posted: 03-03-07 18:28pm

Hello ladies I have quick question if anyone might be able to help with I would greatly appreciate it. I am doing a report for school "Milestones for children" and I am trying to find the reasonings of why an infant puts just about everything in their mouth. I want to say that they are "learning" something through their mouth and I can't seem to find an answer on the web except choking hazards of course. Is'nt though a learning tool for infants? If anyone has answers I would appreciate it.

It's really funny you should ask this. Amelia is starting to crawl and starting to put everything in her mouth. Its crazy. she is 7 months old right now and she still doesn't quite have her hand/mouth cordination but its getting here. she picks up everything.

I can't answer your question though. i don't know if it's a learning thing but i know it's a problem. because it keeps me on my toes all the time.

This is one of the many sites that popped up when I typed in Oral Latent stage of development in my search engine.

If you don't find anything I will hunt down my child psych book and look up the stages and let you know what it says.

Good luck, I was going to say that I miss writing papers, but I don't now that I think about it.

Hey! Ive just studied early childhood and it covers stuff like this. Infants put things in their mouths to differenciate between things through textures e.g A baby would start to know the feel and texture of a bottle when they put it in their mouths so anytime something has the texture of a bottle they will automatically start sucking it...... hope this makes sense!

There are so many different theories, which you probably know because you are studying this stuff.

Milestones for Children is such a huge topic.

I personally like Piaget's six stages of sensorimotor development for cognitive development from birth to 24 months.

It depends on what your report is focusing on because a combination of theories could be what your teacher/professor is looking for. Piaget's cognitive stages of development and Erikson's psychosocial stages are a good combination if you are spanning through a child' s life.
With both theorists, you would be touching on the cognitive and emotional development of a child's lifespan through adolescence.

Auzzie really did a great job at answering your question in a condensed yet precise, simple way!!! My papers were always too dang wordy. I think it drove my professors crazy.

hahaha im sure you didnt drive your professors crazy!! Im more of a Vygotsky Theory fan even though they are very similiar except the fact that Vygotsky believes in scaffolding the childs learning e.g a person helpss the infact get to the next stage where as piaget believes that they should get there with no help.

hahaha dont ask me any other questions, i prob wouldnt know. We did alot of work on theorists and we had to pick and choose the theories that we liked and make a philosophy of our own.

Did you learn about emergent curriculum, Developmentally Appropriate Practices (Dap) etc??

lol in my class we never had to get up in front of anyone and do anything..... At times we had role plays but only the ones that wanted to do it had to. Its mainly assignments and a teacher standing out the front and giving you all the information. Im sure you would be great at it!!

The theorist part does correlate to psychology but the rest of the course is alot different to psychology.

Pretty much you have to know why children do things before you can care for them.
