Amniocentesis Procedure
Posted: 03-05-07 12:24pm

I am scheduled for an amniocentesis this week. I am told that the facility where it will be done, does not numb the area before insertion of the needle. I have read articles by doctors that say in is no more painful than an injection, but others say it is painful.
Has anyone had an amniocentesis done?

How does amnio compare to the HSG procedure?

Any experiences or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm sorry, .i've never had one. But I wanted to tell you good luck!

If you don't mind me asking, why are you having the procedure?

I had one done and it didn't hurt any more than getting a shot. The thing with it is that you are getting a shot in the tummy and that isn't a normal spot for many of us. Don't look at the needle, because it is a large needle and can freak you out.

They will do an ultrasound to check on the baby and to see where he/she is positioned. For most they are also checking to see if there is reason to do an amnio. Often they are looking for tell tale signs of Down's Syndrome, Spina Bifida, or other physical ailments. They will usually lower your risks, which may mean you don't have the test done. My risks were low, but I opted to continue with the procedure. Peace of mind!!!! Then the doc will scrub your tummy down with a antiseptic cleaner. They will then have the ultrasound equipment back on so they know that they are poking into water not baby. The needle goes in slowly (don't look at it) and they extract a bit of fluid and the needle comes out. Take big breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth while it's happening and things will be better. I can't stress not looking enough.
To me the needle hurt more coming out than going in.

Good luck to you!!!

I had one done. and Mommy35 (sorry i forgot your name.) explained it very well. for me haveing blood drawn hurt far worse than the amnio.

I watched the whole thing it didnt' bother you but if you are worried about needles then dont' watch. you can watch the procedure on the screen. they will moniter your baby to make sure that it doesnt' get pricked or anything.

good luck and keep us informed.
