Q: Pregnancy & Oligomenorrhea (long menstrual cycle)
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 7th, 2007
I am mom to three children ages 6, 4, and 18 months. With my babies I was 12 weeks and 10 1/2 weeks pregnant before I had a positive pregnancy test(not even blood pregnancy test was positive) and they were all born 6-9 weeks premature and sga(small for gestational age) so I am wondering if this is a case of severe low homone levels or something. I only get my period every 80 days. But had complete work up jan 8 and it showed that I was mid cycle(lmp was nov 18th) but no problems. No one has been able to explain why for 11 years I have had my periods every 80 days or so so to get pregnant conception would have been jan 16th or so. Period was due jan 28-feb 1st. Well it is march 7th and no period.(would make me just over 9 weeks pregnant I think. But I get negative home pregnancy test. I had very little very light pink discharge around feb 9th but thats it. Since I dont have insurance no one will see me without a confirmed pregnancy test. So I dont know what I should do. Is it possible that my hormone levels are just very low? Would that explain my negative pregnancy tests, sga's and inability to carry to term.

Pregnancy Answer A2461
A pregnancy test becomes positive 10 days after conception. Conception happens several hours after ovulation. Ovulation happens 14 days before an expected menstrual period is due. If your cycle lasts 80 days, that means that ovulation occurs around the 66th day of the cycle. A pregnancy test can therefore, become positive after the 76th day of the cycle. And because the age of a pregnancy is counted from the first day of the last period it appears that a pregnancy in your case can not be detected before the 11th week. Compared to most cases, where the cycle menstrual lasts about 4 weeks, pregnancies are detected in the 4th week earliest. The maximum duration of a normal menstrual cycle is 35 days. If longer than 35 days, the menstrual cycle is called "oligomenorrhea". Oligomenorrhea is a sign of hypothyroidism.
If your last period started on the 15th of November and your cycle lasts 80 days, then the next period should have come around the 5th February. If your pregnancy test now is negative, then you are probably not pregnant. The pink discharge you experienced around February 9th could have been your period. You can follow up with your gynecologist to track your reproductive health.
