Urine Color
Posted: 03-07-07 21:11pm

I am new to the forum so I apologize if this is in the wrong spot.

I am 38 and my wife is 5 months pregnant so I figured it was time to make some lifestyle changes. I have enjoyed beer for many years. Probably have a few drinks every evening. So I decide to turn over a new leaf and haven't had any beer since last Friday.

Anyway, almost immediately I noticed that my urine was much more yellow and had an odor that I would describe as normal but more prominent. When I was drinking beer in the evening, my urine was always clear and odorless.

I am curious on the immediate change? I assume I need to drink more water but why did it change immediately after putting the beer aside? Was I getting the hydration through the beer? Even though I would only drink in the evening, my urine was clear and odorless throughout the whole day.

Thanks for any replies!

i would definately say you need to drink more water. do you urinate more or less since you quit drinking?

I am urinating more throughout the day since I am trying to drink more water. In the evening, it is about the same since I was urinating due to drinking beer and now I am urinating due to drinking water/tea.

Urine should have some color to it. Clear urine generally means you are drinking too many fluids. This can cause you to lose electrolytes. Too dark of urine generally means you're not getting enough fluids. It may also be darker in the morning or after taking vitamins, etc.

What about the stronger than usual odor? I am assuming that means that the urine is more concentrated since I am not drinking enough water, therefore, it has a stronger odor??

The odor is not an abnormal odor...just much more prevalent.

Bold statements were highlighted, because clear urine means you're drinking enough water or too much water. Dark colored urine means you're drinking little to no water and you need to replenish your system with more water. To recover electrolytes, drink some gatorade. Drinking a lot of water isnt totally a bad thing, outside the lose of electrolytes.

The only thing I recall having a very foul odor in urine is after eating asparagus. Had any asparagus lately, david?

Props to you for having courage to stop drinking.

Pretty much you need to replace all the liquid that you used to drink in beer with another liquid, and that should get your body into a good balance. When you first stopped beer, your fluid intake dropped dramatically so tht explains the sudden change in your urine.
