My Daughter Only Had Acute Mono Symptoms Less Than a Week! Posted: 03-08-07 03:22am
My 14 year old daughter stayed home from
school on Friday, Mar.2 with a sore throat
and fever. She figured it was Strep like
it's been the last two times. Urgent care
did a Rapid Strep Test=negative. MD gave
her penicillin and said if culture comes
back negative, to stop the meds. and come
back in for re-evaluation and a MonoSpot
test. Well, the meds. didn't work over the
weekend. Fever still 102.8 and throat very
sore. She was pale and definitely not
feeling good. Back to Urgent Care on
Sunday. Saw another MD who suspected Mono
right off. Swollen glands and tonsils
enlarged, etc. She even put a mask on.
MonoSpot came back Positive. So, off we
went back home with instructions to take
Ibuprofen, drink liquids, etc. etc.--the
usual treatment for Mono, which isn't
much.
I thought we were going to be in for a
long haul. She looked like a truck ran her
over. Temp. still up. Throat killling her.
Slept a lot. Went to bed at 7:30 pm two
nights in a row.
Okay, this went on for about 2 days of
really feeling bad. But, gradually she
stayed awake all day and just watched tv
in our bedroom. Started eating more,
although still not a lot of solid foods.
By yesterday, Tuesday, the 6th, she was
feeling a lot better. Temp. down to 99.
Throat a little better. Doing all the
homework and projects she's been missing,
etc.
Today is Wednesday and her temp. is 97.5.
Throat almost normal. Ate dinner and even
had a lot of Triscuits later. She did some
major spring cleaning in her room. Cleared
out a bunch of books and clutter.
Vaccuumed and dusted. The whole nine
yards. Worked on an English assignment all
night at the computer. Made a list of
homework that needed to be completed. In
other words, seems totally fine now!
I'm wondering if a person can WILL
themselves to be well! The reason I think
this is because it turns out she wants to
go to this dance concert on Saturday night
at a local club. Teens are allowed this
time. So, do you think the power of
positive thinking can really work? I mean,
she acts totally normal and like her old,
teenaged hormanal self again! Gee, I
almost like it better when she's sick! Not
really, of course. But, she's definitely
more mellow.
So, is it possible that she had a mild
case of Mono and that she really is all
better now? Of course I don't want her to
relapse...but on the other hand, I don't
believe in making someone lay around if
they feel good.
Has anyone here ever had such a
short-lived case of Mono? Does this mean
she could easily catch it again? I'm
inclined not to let her go to this dance.
In fact, as this point, it's out of the
question! She even wants to go to school
tomorrow, but I think she should just stay
home the rest of the week--2 more days.
That way she can study for the two tests
that she missed. This definitely makes me
happy that she won't be missing so much
school like I thought she would! She's in
a very intensive humanities program and
it's not good to get behind in that.
Thanks for your input! P.S. When I hit
submit, all my capitalized words show up
in lower case and vice versa! WHY???

Well, she went back to school today...only
a week since she started having symptoms.
Last week at this time she had a very sore
throat and fever of 102.8. When she was
diagnosed with Mono on Sunday with a
MonoSpot, she looked and felt just
HORRIBLE!
I just never knew someone could be sick
with Mono for only 5 days.
She is totally back to normal. Lots of
energy and she's singing again! So I know
her voice is back.
Well, I hope this is the end of it.
