Q: 3d Ultrasound

I just got this magazine in the mail about my second trimester and it says you can get a 3d ultrasound and the doctor can tell if it has any parts of the daddy or mommy. Like if the baby has the daddys lips and the mommies nose. I was wondering is getting a 3d ultrasound free? And when can I get one to see what similarities the baby has?

ha, a 3d ultrasound for free? i don't think you'll have any luck, there. they're pretty expensive, because they aren't medically necessary. they're just for fun, pretty much. i wouldn't get one done in the 2nd trimester. the baby will just look like an alien. it's suggested you get them done probably around 26wks at the absolute earliest. i had mine done at 31wks i believe, it turned out perfect. you want the baby to be developed enough so you can see what he/she looks like. i paid $75 for mine, but i got lucky. they are usually a lot more expensive than that.

the only way you can get a free 3d ultrasound is if you are having complications of sorts. You won't get one free other than that. even then they aren't (some of the time) always 100% covered.

you will not really be able to see what your baby looks like until way after 25 weeks. i had one at 27 weeks and he did look the same. i wouldn't say that we were able to see who the baby looked more like.....but ummmm we saw the baby. And amelia didnt' look the same and hers was done at 31 weeks.....and she looked the same but you cant' tell whos features she has.....she looks like me now....and she has her daddy's big toe. lol but you can't never be sure that they are actually going to look the same.

Alright thanks everyone.
.I'll talk to my doctor about it because I know we are low on money, so I am going to wait til I am about 25-30 weeks. This magazine tells me a lot about the 2nd trimester, it's telling me to buy panty liners and all kinds of things. I guess I'll be having some leaking. Err!

To tell you the truth, your money is better spent elsewhere. Especially if you don't have much to go around. 3d ultrasounds usually cost $200 or more. You really need that money in the bank. The ultrasound pictures are nice, but they're a luxury that .i'm not sure you can afford. $200 buys a lot of baby stuff, and it'd be comforting to know you have a bit of cushion in the bank if you fall on hard times. a 3d picture won't help you if your baby gets sick or if you run out of diapers.

That's actually good to know. I just thought it would be cool to experience because I heard about you can see if the baby has the daddies or mommies nose, lips ect. And .Nick thought it would be a good idea. My first appointment my doctor gave us a packet of 3d 4d ultrasounds that you can have but it never gave a price. But if it's that expensive, than I'll put that money somewhere else. We've been struggling for a few months now, so I think I'll hold off on that. Sad
.It sucks because I never heard of such a thing, but I will just put the money in the bank whenever we get any.

I understand, hon. My husband and I were both working full-time jobs, and even we couldn't afford the pictures. Well, we could have, but we knew we could put the money to better use. And then I was taken off work at the beginning of my third trimester, so thank .god we didn't spend that money.

It would have been really nice to see her face - it was driving me nuts wondering who she looked like, but I would have felt much worse if we'd started struggling financially. We're getting by now on his income, but it's because we're so careful with our money. If it's not a necessity, we have a hard time justifying the expense. Everything changes when you have another tiny person who's relying on your decisions.

Having a small income isn't easy - but if you're smart with your money, you can make it work.

or you can just wait until the baby's born and see for real.

i don't think the 3d/4d ones are good enough to see whose features the baby has, the nose and lips always look really smushed to me.

I just saw pictures of what the 3d and 4d ultrasounds look like, and I think I will wait until the baby is actually born. It looks so close together, and I don't want to get my hopes up if they can't see the who's features the baby has.

please, they dont really show who's features the baby has. Yeah my son looked jjust like the pics but he was born like three weeks later. you cant really tell who the baby looks like. its not really needed unless there are complications and even then some don't even do them. now if you have the money to get them done then have them done....but if not, it ends up just being a picture. like laura said...it can't help you if you need the money you spent on them.

also the baby's lips nose eyes and all of that stuff changes in the months that the baby grows. when the baby is born it may look l8ike mommy but as it grows it changes. the baby changes

Honestly, all of the 3D or 4D pictures that I have seen have been kind of...well...creepy! Maybe they were just taken to early (this is just my opinion and I do not mean to offend anyone!) I definitely think you could spend the money on something much more practical. Unless, you can get a great deal like Krissy, then it might be worth it.

I'm getting it done in Mid May ...~hopefully~. I have seen some pic's and some are pretty creepy which is why I am waiting until I am between 31 and 34 wks. They are pretty pricey. The cheapest one anywhere near me is $145 cdn. for the scan, gender determination, 2 photo's and a cd with the photo's on it.
I know I may not like the results and don't expect to know what the babe will look like until he's born, but it could always trun out great, look at how happy Krissy was with hers!
It's just something I want to do, just because!
Plus... It won't be me forking over the cash! Laughing
I do agree though, some of the pic's I have seen online are a little disturbing, and if it was me who had to pay for it I wouldn't do it. The money could be much better spent, but my aunt offered to take me for one so I accepted!

I think so. and this is after looking around for any places in ontario, some were cheaper, just way to far to travel. this is what the site says about the package:

• CD-ROM with 3D images
• Two 4x6 3D colourized photos
• Listening to baby’s heartbeat
• Gender determination, if requested

.how many photo's did you get with yours?

i think i got 10. plus a video. & 2 printed pictures.

you probably get more than just the 2 on the disc.
that would be a huge huge huge rip-off if you didn't.

oh thanks! seriously at first I thought that seemed like a great deal, hopefully the disc includes more photo's, I'll for sure ask before making the appoint. Now that I think about it 2 pic's really isnt worth 145. when i already have ultrasound pics that were free.
