Is There An Age Limit to Getting Birth Control? Posted: 03-08-07 18:18pm
My friend has been haveing unprotected sex
offten, with the 'pull out method' and I
am worried she is going to get pregnant,
and she would like me to go with her to a
planned parenthood near us so she can get
birth control without her mother knowing.
But I am worried that sense she is only 16
she won't be able to get any. Is there an
age you have to be to get birth control?

Planned Parenthood and Family Planning
give birth control to teens without their
parents knowing, even if they are under
18. I am not aware of any cutoff age, but
I do know that 16 is old enough to go
there and get birth control. So she
should not have any trouble there. In the
meantime, she can go to the store and get
condoms. There is no excuse for having
unprotected sex unless she is actually
trying to get pregnant. The pull out
method does not work very well since
pregnancy can just as easily be cause by
pre-ejaculate.

Yes, I know she could get pregnant, that's
why I am going to help her get
birthcontrol. Thank you for the help. I
know she should use a condum, but she says
she doesn't like them, so I am trying to
find the next best thing for her. thank
you once again for the help

As far as I know there is no cut off age.
But I do know that 16 is plenty old
enough! ( I have been on it since I was
14). It is very true that there is no
excuse for her to not be using some form
of birth control. As fas as I know they go
off a sliding pay scale so it will be
either free or very inexpensive. And the
health department gives out free condoms.
(which she should be using also!) It is
the only way to protect herself from
std's. (pregnancy is not the only
consequence of unprotected sex!)

If she does not want to use condoms, she
could at least use spermicide in the
meantime. That is available over the
counter just like condoms. It does not
protect against STDs, and it does not
offer as much protection against pregnancy
as condoms do, but it is better than
nothing if she is planning on having sex
before she gets into Planned Parenthood.

Spermicide is a gel or a liquid of a
similar consitancy that is used during sex
to kill sperm. Each kind has it's own
specifics on application.

Yup. To add to what Eiri said, it's the
slimy feeling stuff on condoms. It's
called spermicidal lubricant on condoms.
That means it acts as a lubricant, but it
also kills of any sperm that might leak
out. They sell spermicide by itself too
though. It takes a few different forms.
Sometimes it looks kind of like a pill
that is put into the vagina. Sometimes it
is like a thin sheet of tissue paper that
you put into the vagina. It dissolves and
kills sperm. Like Eiri said, you have to
read the directions because they might be
different. Some kinds have to be put in a
bit before sex so that they have time to
dissolve. The tissue paper kind says to
put it in at least 15 minutes before sex.
It is sold right next to the condoms in
most stores.
