Hi there - I'm getting terribly confused
about using wild yam cream! I was
recommended it as a fertility enhancer,
but reading on the net it can also be used
as a contraceptive. And there's
conflicting information about when to take
it in your cycle for what purpose! Eek! So
I'm now worried that it's actually
detrimental to falling pregnant. There's
no mention of this topic on the
instructions.
Does anyone know for sure?
Also, would anyone know if taking both
vitex and wild yam is detrimental?
Thanks! Cate

From what I have read about wild yam,
neither is true. Wild yam is not a
fertility enhancer or a form of birth
control. Wild yam is used for many
things, but it is not meant to be either
of the things that you mentioned.
Many people thought that wild yam
contained progesterone (the hormone the
female body released when pregnant, also
the hormone used in some forms of birth
control to keep the body from releasing an
egg), but this does not seem to be the
case. It seems that progesterone actually
might have been added to some wild yam
products. More confusion resulted when
hormones such as progesterone were
manufactured using wild yam. After that,
many people thought the wild yam contained
the hormones, but they were mistaken.
Also, wild yam is not proven to be safe
for children. That means that you would
have to be very careful with it if you did
get pregnant.
Wild yam is available in a vaginal cream,
but that is actually not proven to be safe
or effective in adults either.
Wild yam can also interfere with different
medications and can even be toxic in large
doses, so it is very important that you
discuss all of that with your doctor.
When you look this stuff on the internet,
look for sites that contain evidence and
studies. Look for things written by
doctors. Try to avoid anything not
written by a doctor, or anything on So and
So's personal blog or anything like that.
Look for things with .edu, .gov, or .org
as opposed to .com. There's an awful lot
of garbage out there. Check out this site
for more information:

s/druginfo/natural/patient-wildyam.html
I would suggest you stop taking the wild
yam at least until you can ask your ob-gyn
about it. It sounds to me like it is a
waste of time and money, and even a
potential danger to you, since it does not
seem to be intended to do what you want it
to do.

yam cream works! Posted: 07-23-08 17:52pm
I am convinced that yam cream is the
reason my second child is alive! I had a
miscarriage in January, read everything I
could about everything, started putting
yam cream on my inner arms or other soft
spots (rotating around the body). I rubbed
in about a teaspoon twice a day AFTER
ovulation. I got pregnant my second cycle
after the miscarriage but this time
maintained the pregnancy. I firmly believe
that the yam cream helped my aging 39 year
old body maintain the pregnancy through
the first twelve weeks.
Here are the symptoms I was having...I was
recognizing minor changes in my cycle,
nothing to write home about, but evidence
that my body was changing. I miscarried
almost exactly at 8 weeks...what would
have been a regular period were I not
pregnant. While I was pregnant, I got
careless after 9 weeks or so with the
cream and had some spotting. I went back
to the cream and no more spots. After 12
weeks, I slowed then stopped the cream.
Now, my two and a half year old son is
charming and perfect!
If you are having similar problems, don't
even ask the doctors...they have opinions
and research to back up their claims. This
cream did not hurt and I believe helped
with no side effects.
