Non-sexual Transmission?
Posted: 03-09-07 12:26pm

important question possibly affecting my marriage.
He is a wrestling coach.
I received a sheepish call one day saying the heavyweight student he spars with has come to practice admitting he has crabs.
My husband says he has them too...he asks me to check myself...and I have them.

Of course....I'm too embarrassed to question the student to see if the story is really true.
I don't have any other reason to suspect my husband for bad behavior.

So here's the question....what are the chances his story is true?

I don't want to accuse him, but I don't want to be a naive fool either.

Well pubic lice is very similar to head lice, and I'm sure you know how easily that spreads! Seems a whole elementary school will get them all at the same time haha.

I'm not entirely sure how much groin-to-groin action there is during a wrestling match, sorry if that sounds odd. I suppose it's always possible...

Your best way to figure this out without being accusatory is to ask the student himself. It's not an invasion of privacy because he has possibly "infected" you and you have a right to know. Tell him the whole story, of how your husband was informed by the boy, and how you now have them too. That way, the kid knows it's not just some random accusation of his hygiene!

Thank you for the reply.

I'm not sure if I can bring myself to question the boy.
I'll think about it.

The boy is very hairy - even down his legs.
So I'm wondering how far the lice can migrate from the pubic area, especially if there is alot of hair.

My husband isn't especially hairy in the legs, but he does wrestle in loose shorts which can ride up.

Everyone is wearing jock straps, but the leg-on-leg contact is there. pelvis on pelvis probably can occur in some situations I suppose.

If the situation can happen in a case like this I feel like I could put my mind to rest about it.
But there isn't much at all on the internet about crabs being spread during wrestling....scabies, yes - but not much about crabs.

Which, I guess, leaves me with doubts I don't like to have.

According to this site it sounds very possible:

"Sexual Transmission:
You can get crabs whenever some part of your body that has coarse hair (such as the pubic area, eyelashes, eyebrows, facial hair, chest, or armpits) comes into contact with the infested pubic or other course hair. Crabs do not usually attach to head hair.

Most cases of crabs are transmitted through sexual contact, when the crabs move from the pubic hair of one person to the pubic hair of another. Even when there is no sexual penetration, you can get crabs or transmit crabs to someone else.

Nonsexual Transmission:
Nonsexual transmission of crabs is also possible. A person can get crabs from:

* sleeping in an infested bed or using infested towels.
* wearing infested clothing.
* an infested toilet seat, though this is rare."
