we'll get used to it. It's really not a
huge deal ladies. It's not like you'll
have to browse every forum here and if
someone has a question they post in an
obscure forum, they can always pm their
homies to let them know,

My grad project is going to be the death
of me...if .I have to look at ".Las
.Meninas" one more time, I might have to
kill myself.

What's your deadline, .nat? And what does
your project involve? Like, what are you
trying to do with it?

The deadline's .June 1st for completion,
.June 10 for presentation. Normally .I
wouldn't worry, but this project
determines whether or not .I get to
graduate.
I'm doing a comparison of Diego
Velazquez's 1656 painting ".las .meninas"
(Maids of HOnor) and Francisco de la
Goya's 1800 painting ".la .familia de
.carlos iv" (the family of Charles IV).
The works parallel each other profoundly,
which wasn't a coincidence; .goya
intentionally modeled his royal painting
against .velazquez's.
I am also writing a children's book about
the youngest son of .Carlos IV, el
.Infante .Don .Francisco de .Paula. All of
this will be done in .Spanish, which is
the part that's killing me.
I was fortunate enough to see both
paintings at the .Prado in .Madrid, so
that cuts my research in half because .I
can make the comparison mostly an opinion
piece, but it's the fact that it's all in
.spanish that's headache-inducing.
I mean, there are only so many parallels a
person can find!

*blink*
okay, I pulled both paintings up on
.google .image search. I notice the faces
in ".las .meninas" are bigger, and the
painting looks much less formal than the
other painting. But I assume .i'm missing
other things? Is it a political statement?
Was there drama?
ps: .i'm feeling quite dumb tonight

I feel dumb with my topic, too, .Laura. I
don't know what I was thinking when I
chose it.
Basically, in both paintings, to the far
left, the painter has painted himself and
his canvas into the work. The central
figure in each painting is female, and
they are posed the same way, with their
head turned left and their left arm
stiffly down. There are 13 people in each
painting, and those are the cardinal
similarities.
There are major differences, such as the
feel of the paintings. Like you pointed
out, "las meninas" is much less formal
than "la familia de carlos iv". even
though there are the same number of people
in each, and "las meninas" also has the
dog, "las meninas" was spaced better and
does not appear as crowded as the other
painting.
There is more, but I am lazy. If you'd
honestly like to know (which I doubt you
do, even I don't want to!) I'd be happy to
send you the translated paper once .I
finish it.
*Edited because I spelled dog "dgo." GO
ME!*
