Anxiety And Muscle Spasm
Posted: 03-17-07 21:38pm

I am 22 and have been having anxiety and panic attacks. I also have been having muscle spasms for about 2 months now. My doctor put me on Welbutrin for a couple of weeks and that did not stop the muscle spasms. I am really freaking myself out that I have MS or ALS. I don't know what to do. I feel I can't wait it out because my mind is always racing about the fact that I could have a sever neurological disorder that can end everything that was going so good for a while. I really want to just go in and get a CAT scan or MRI. The muscle spasms are infrequent and don't always occur. They do happen everyday, however, it is spartically and more when I get off of work.
Has anyone had this symtom of muscle spasms. Sometimes there is even some sort of muscle numbness and pain, but mostly just sparatic spasms. I'm not talking about trembeling or twitching, had that as well but mostly subsided. These muscle spasms are running my mind crazy. I got a promotion at work but keep thinking I won't be able to do it because I got some serious neurological disease. Has anyone had muscle spasms as symtoms of anxiety. My panic attacks have subsided, but an still worrying ALL THE TIME that I have a serious disease. This is among the other weird symtoms and feelings I have. HELP!

I'm sorry you are going through this! My first question is where are the muscle spasms? Are they always in the same location? How strong are the spasms? Do other people notice or is it something that you can only feel?

Have you brought your concerns to the attention of your doctor?

I have muscle spasms in my neck. The are related to a car accident, however, I have noticed that when I am stressed out my spasms can get worse. I am on antispasmatics. They are very mild and do not interact with my daily life. So try not to worry to much ( I know, easier said than done).

I hope you get to the bottom of things. Keep us posted!

Your root problem here may actually be obsessions. These are treated through anti-depressants most of the time. Be careful of reading stuff on the internet relating to any type of disease because the symptoms can generally apply to anything and you'll be looking everywhere for an answer in no time.

And what if you had MS. It is not the end of the world. Put your mind at ease, go to a Neurologist and get tested. You can live with MS. If you don't stop obsessing, you will make yourself sick.

Thank you for the feedback. I have been taking anti-depresants and things have been getting better with the panic attacks, so that's awesome. The involuntary muscle spasms have resided a little bit after taking the pills, and overall felt better. I think I do have an obsession problem. I never thought of it, but it is when I'm idel and things fester in my head. Pretty soon I let it fester long enough that it creates the panic. Obviously, lately I have been festering on the fact that these spasms haven't stopped after taking the meds and I feel like I have something more. I feel it in the head a little bit, but I think that is just the anxiety/obsession occuring. If anyone who has been in this situation or has anything to add I would love the advise. Thank You, Ryan
