How Many U/s Is Normal?
Posted: 03-20-07 23:12pm

I'm talking to a friend who is 2 weeks behind me. she says she gets and ultrasound once a month and thats normal. she has 10 pics! I have 1!
she said they have to do them all the time to make sure he is growing okay, and that because i've only had 2 (one scheduled and one emerg.) and one scheduled for Apr.30 they could have easily miss a defect, and I should be upset because my doctor is obviously lacking in care for MY baby,
Maybe she's being a health forum... but is this right? Am I supposed to have more u/s?
why is she getting so many? and I've seen the baby once at 12 wks and once at 19. I don't get it.

I think it depends more on your insurance and what it covers. My only covers 2 a dating one at 8 weeks or so and a gender determination at 22 weeks.. I think your situation is a lot more normal then hers is. I wouldnt worry about it. As long as your doctor is measuring you and listening to the baby's heart I wouldnt worry.

I think most people have between 2 and 3.

once a month is definately not normal and would indicate that hers is a high risk pregnancy, which is why they are keeping an eye on baby's growth etc.

if/when I get pregnant again I have to have appts every 2 weeks from the beginning and u/s each month, then from about 20 weeks they'd want me to be seen every week. But this is because of my past history, it is not "normal".

so she's either lying (although you say she has pics) or has a high risk pregnancy.

I only had two. My pregnancy was without complications.

If your doctor thinks everything looks fine, there's no need for more ultrasounds. Sounds like your little one is doing great. Wink

I love the way people call it gender determination when that isn’t what it really is. During a level II some techs don’t even look at the genitals.

But normally insurance will only pay for 1-2 u/s. If you are having complications of pregnancy then they may be released to do more than that. Some insurance will make you pay the out of network cost for more than 1-2 u/s. I had to have them 1-2 times a month because of complications. With each of my u/s I was given between 1 – 7 pictures…so I have like 24 pictures of my little one.

She maybe full of it….or maybe her tech is giving her a load of pictures and she is just telling you they are from different u/s. who knows?

i had 5 so far and im 31 weeks, but i would have only had 3 so far if she cooperated

my first one was at a pregnancy center (keim center, its a crisis pregnancy thing that does free preg tests and give you referals and stuff) so i guess that doesnt really count so i would haev only had 2 then

i had 3 recently (about 21-28 weeks i think) because they thought she had a higher risk of downs and they couldnt check everything they needed because she wasnt laying the right way ever

its fine as long as they check the heart beat and all that, oh and dont worry too much if htey dont measure you either, i never got measured until last month when i was 28 weeks

Hey! When I was pregnant with my son I had 2 u/s one at 12 weeks and the other at 20weeks and that was it.. I think it all depends on insurance and if the see something with the baby that they want to keep there eye on.. My friend had them all the time. They saw something wrong with the umbilicalcord so they had to make sure everything was ok.. But it sounds normal to get 2-3 u/s through out the whole pregnancy.. So I think your alright Smile Good Luck with everything Smile

i was only supposed to get one at 18 weeks but developed mild complications towards the end and had 3 all together, 1 at 18 weeks, 1 at 37 weeks, and 1 the day before i gave birth.

In the UK two u/s is the norm the first at 12 weeks and the second at 20 but some people do have one before 12 weeks if they don't know how many weeks they are. Some babies are slow growers (just like my .Mika) so they have extra u/s to make sure everything is ok.
