Dysmenorrhea (painful bleeding), Hypermenorrhea (excessive b
Posted: 03-23-07 09:26am

Hello,

i am 24 years old, I have never taken birth control before and I have always said that I never would. Well, I had been having very bad cramps and severe bleeding during my period. My period only lasts for 5 (6days tops). I visited my gyn and she started me on yaz. I took a pill on the first day of my period and I have only taken 4 pills total. I quit using the pill because I was not feeling myself. I was in a state of severe depression, throwing up and losing hair like crazy. I literally spent 2 days in bed because I was so depressed. That is not me, I am a very upbeat person and happy all of the time. I quit taking my pill and I feel back to myself again but my period has lasted 12 days now, I called my gyn and didn't get any forward answers. I just want to know how long I can expect my period top last. I know that hormones in the pills react but I dindn't think that after 4 pills that it would be this bad. I have been 8 days without a pill now and I am still menstruating.

Birth control pills are used for treating painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea) and excessive menstrual bleeding (hypermenorrhea) in addition to helping prevent unwanted pregnancy. Birth control pills can help a woman in these cases only if excessive menstrual bleeding or painful menstruation is due to a functional hormonal disorder, and can not help treat organic tumors, infections, or other such disorders. Depression is a temporary side effect some women experience after using birth control pills.
You SHOULD consult your gynecologist about the prolonged menstruation (menorrhagya) and/or spotting you are experiencing!
