Pregnancy And Blood Type? Posted: 03-24-07 21:14pm
Me and my wife have been thinking about
having a child but she remembers about
hearing a doctor tell her that because her
blood type is B- that if the baby was any
other blood type her body could kill the
unborn child. Does anyone have any
knowledge of this or know anything about
it? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely yours,
A worried would be father

I am not sure about this b blood type.
But, I have RH negetive blood type and
that is 5% of population. I don't know
how I got it, cause neither my mom or dad
have it. It is not a big deal as long as
her doctor knows about it and gives her
the appropriate shots during her
pregnancy. The shot is called Rogan I
think. Basically, if you are not RH
negetive and she is, then there is a 50 50
percent chance the baby would either be or
not the RH negetive. If the baby happens
to not be RH negetive, then your wife's
body will detect the fetus as a foreign
object and will then built antibodies that
can harm the fetus. This is the reason
some women used to give still births and
then die. But no worries, cause they know
how to treat it now... I know
plenty of women who are and have many
healthy kids...

if the mother has a rh- (ie a- b-) then
there is the risk that the mothers body
will create antibodies against the child.
This only becomes a problem if the child's
blood enters the mother - such as at
birth.
during pregnancy it isn't a problem
because the placenta controls the blood
passing between mother and child.
this is helped by the administration of an
injection (in the UK called anti-d)
typically given at 28 and 36 weeks of
pregnancy and also again a few hours after
birth.
this D-antigen mops up any of the baby's
Rh+ blood cells that have entered the
mother and destroy them before she becomes
sensitised to them.
In a first pregnancy this is unlikey to
cause a problem even if untreated because
she has not yet developed sensitivity to
the Rh+ cells.
however in a subsequent pregnancy she may
already be sensitised and so her body may
see the child as a foreign body.
Simple answer is - pregnancy is not a
problem, because there is the anti-D
injection to safe guard against it.
So as long as she has proper medical care
through her pregnancy then this will not
be an issue.

No, her body will not *kill* the unborn
baby.
i am blood type b- and currently 25 weeks
pregnant. basically, if a mother is rh
negative and the baby is rh positive, it
*could* cause anemia in the baby. however,
there is an injection called rogham that
is given to the mother during pregnancy
that prevents this from happening.
basically, there is nothing to worry
about. it isn't an issue at all during
first pregnancies (usually), and the
rogham injection is given once during
subsequent pregnancies.
this was mainly something to worry about a
looong time ago, before the medical
advances came along.

they're right. it's not a cause for
concern really, anymore. i'm rh- & i
just gave birth to a healthy baby boy
whose blood type was a+ .. i had a rhogam
shot when i was 27wks pregnant, & then
again the day after i delivered, since he
was positive & i am negative.
feel free to ttc! good luck!

sooo much alike!! I love him!!
I got the same series of shots. I cried at
about 20 weeks cuz my boobs weren't sore
anymore and I *swore* my body had killed
.oni. Wasn't the case apparently!
My Dr. thought it was *hilarious*!
