I'm 35 years old, I've recently had a anterior lumbar spinal fusion in February 2007 on L4,L5,S1 I have two rods with six screws. Would carrying a baby be to stressful on my back? Would I be able to have a normal pregnancy? How long should I wait?

This would be an excellent question for the doctors/surgeons that performed your surgery. They would be able to give you precise answers for your situation. Good luck.

Hiya

This is a question I am trying to get an cast iron answer to. I had a similar op when i was a kid and still get niggles of pain from time to time but only due to my now not so perfect posture as my back healed just fine. I am 23 weeks pregnant and while my back aches I have not had any real pain. If your surgery was recent I would advise taking real care and speaking to someone before getting pregnant as I remember it took a long time to heal properly after the surgery and you want to get better before launching into something new. I have been placed on the high risk register with a compulsary doc at my labour in hospital as it may cause problems during labour, although no one has told me what yet. I understand that due the my fusion being the bottom of my spine an epidural may be out of the question. Its wierd I came on here looking for answers myself, so I hope I have helped a little for you.

Good luck in wantever you decide, and keep well!

I have also had a fusion on L5, L4 and S1. I just found out im 4 weeks pregnant Smile however i'm super nervous about the delivery. I know i may be in pain during this pregnancy and that's fine. i have a 4 year old son who i had b/4 the fusion, the surgery was in 2007. i just don't want a really dramatic labor. my neurosurgeon said there wouldn't be a problem , just no epidural b/c they can't get it through the titanuim. that's fine too...so i may choose water birth. i figured there would be less weight on my back and it may help. here's to all moms with this promblem! XOXO
