Hello I have an illness that similarly
relates to HPV in description and I'm not
quite sure what it is considering I have
had no sex--just masturbation and HPV can
only be transmitted through sex with a
partner. I would like to go to the doctor
about this issue and get it checked out.
However, I do not wish to have my parents
know because it is rather embarrassing.
Yes, I am still living in the house and I
can't go to the doctor on my own. If I
get this checked out, will the doctor be
entitled to discretion about my condition
or will that only happen if I ask him to?
Also, if I get a treatment such as a
anti-viral cream would my parents find out
or would insurance just automatically
cover it no questions asked? I realize
that if I have to have surgery then it is
impossible to conceal from my parents. If
anyone has been to the doctor before and
has been in a similar situation I would
appreciate it if you would post a reply
telling me about your expirence and/or
your knowledge about doctor discretion.
Thanks a lot!
P.S. If anyone has some creative ways for
an excuse for the parents to go to the
doctor's office I would love to hear about
them. I really don't want to wait till my
physical in August because this disease is
destroying my life and I want it back.

If you haven't had sex then it can't be
hpv with means it could be something more
serious.
You don't need an excuse. Be honest with
them. Why should you be embrarrased about
a potentially dangerous condition?

Eiri is right. It sounds like you have
nothing to be embarrassed about. I would
just tell them you want to be seen sooner.
You don't have to go into too much detail
if you aren't comfortable.

Ok thanks for the addvice on how to deal
with it with my parents. I will take it
into consideration. Now what about doctor
discretion? I don't know if I am going to
tell my parents yet and I would like to
keep my options open. Thanks for your
replys.

If you are under the age of 18 your
parents may still have access to your
records but I'm not totally sure about
that. if you're over 18, they have no way
of knowing.

Not sure where you are located, but here
in Georgia and other surrounding states,
there are public health clinics that you
could go too. The girls here can get free
or discount rate planned parent hood,
(birth control pills/shots), condoms etc,
and the parents need not know about it. I
believe if you were to go to a physican,
the doctor/patient confidentiality clause
may still apply. This is not something to
be embarrassed about, this is your
health....... As for the antibacterial and
insurance issue, anything you purchase
through your insurance company is going to
have a paper trail, so one way or the
other your parents would know. Why not
just talk to your folks, tell them you
would really like to go and have this
checked out and explain to them that you
are embarrassed and need reassurance!

I COMPLETELY know the answer to this one.
I worked with HIPPA records for some
time.IF YOU ARE UNDER !*and under your
parents insurance, they are still your
legal medical representative and you
really can't work around the system very
well. You can absolutely go to the doctor
without them but after the visit is billed
they may still receive a letter saying
that you went to the doctor on that day
but it may or may not have a reason. It
may simply state that someone under their
insurance went to that doctor. They do,
however, have every legal right to find
out more information.
IF YOU ARE OVER 18 and still under your
parents insurance, you can slightly work
the system. Go over your medical forms
very carefully. There is a page that asks
you if there is anyone you DO NOT want to
know your medical information. However,
the same thing as above still applies.
Your parents may still receive a letter
stating that someone under their insurance
went to the doctor, but it will not state
a reason why. This will only work in some
situations though. Many offices will not
even see you if you place somone on that
line for liability reasons, and of course,
everyone's insurance is a little
different, as is the state you are living
in. (though hippa is natiionwide)
Your 3rd idea can be to go to somewhere
that would not use your insurance at all.
They still will of course have hippa but
if you can prove that you can not afford
the visit (i.e. you are a minor, you do
not have a job, you do not want to tell
your parents), they will often see you for
free. Check with your local health
department or planned parenthood. HOWEVER,
this can logically be misused by about
everyone so they are kind of picky.
Lastly, as a personal opinion, I wouldn't
worry about any of this at all and I would
just tell my parents. Obviously, you have
nothing to be ashamed about and i'm sure
your parents care about you. I would just
be a lot less stressed about ligistical
things if I was honest with them. Plus, if
you needed more appointments, you wouldn't
have to worry about keeping things a
secret.
