finn's not quite 5 months and i think he
might still be a little young for it. i've
tried giving it to him a few times now and
he doesn't get it, he gums it and looks at
me like "what?". i even tried giving it to
him without the stopper so he'd get that
it had water in it, but then it just
dribbled out of his mouth and he was
choking and sputtering. a few times he's
closed his mouth around it but i don't
think he's sucking hard enough to get
anything.
i started "trying" at 6 months but ...then
i put it away for a while...Trace was
never really interested in it until like 8
months. Finn may be a little young to
really get it.

Noah is 8 1/2 months and we haven't even
tried yet.
I was planning on asking the doctor at his
9 month check up when was a good time to
start.

keep trying..he'll get the hang of it when
he's ready, but only if he's exposed to
it...with all of my kids, I started giving
them a sippy cup with some diluted juice
or water..it didn't really matter whether
they played with it or if they were
actually drinking from it...I started as
soon as they were able to sit up..remember
that babies and children learn through
play..my middle chld was cup trained by
the age of 6 mos. (had to be because he
drew blood while nursing...and LIKED to
bite..haha..and he wouldn't take a
bottle)..just keep giving it to
him...he'll figure it out...I often gave
my kids their sippy cup in the tub or in
the high chair where they couldn't make
too much of a mess spilling it...I didn't
use the stopper until they figured out
they could get something to drink from
it..good luck..just keep trying..

The past week or so .I've been putting
water in .Kaylee's sippy cup & trying
to get her used to it. She'll suck out of
it & take like 2 sips of the water
& then she's over it. I hope she gets
the hang of it soon cuz then the bottles
are goin bye bye

Mia takes a sippy now....but it gets old
quick. She doesnt' like water to
much....she is all ready for it until she
finds it's not formula.....but she is good
at holding it and figuring how how to get
water out of it....
Oh and i started using this sippy cup tht
is really small....it's not large at all
it has no handles at all and she can get
water out of it easy. she likes it but as
soon as she starts playing with
it.....byebye it goes.

well, it's just for practice right now.
i'm giving him water with his meals and
letting him hold the cup and get used to
it, i'm not trying to replace bottles. i
think i'd like him completely off bottles
by 9-10 months, but if it doesn't happen
it's not a big deal.
thanks for the advice, everyone!

I started trying with .alyvia over a month
ago. We've made absolutely no progress.
She likes to swat at them, but she gets
irritated when I put it to her lips. I
tried putting a bit of water on the spout
to show her that there's stuff in there,
but she doesn't want it near her face -
she'd rather play with it. I also tried
tipping a bit of water into her mouth, and
she did the same thing .finn did - it came
running back out and she coughed a bit.
She's pretty unfamiliar with bottles since
she's breastfed, so that might be why she
doesn't want it. I'm trying not to rush
her.
That's my experience with them so far!

all baba's are diff.
Oni *loved* hers at .finn's age, but only
because she saw .jathan(.baron's
.godchild) drinking from one. I think that
if she didn't see him, she wouldn't be as
interested.
She's been completely off the bottle for
about a month now...maybe 3 weeks.

i don't know which thread it was where
some of you suggested the nuby cups, i
thought it was this one but it's not.
anyway, i got him one of those to try and
it's perfect. i don't know if they make
smaller sizes with handles, but the only
ones i could find were tall with no
handles so i do have to hold it for him,
but he knows how to drink from it. yay!
oh, and it was only like $1 so there's
another bonus.
thanks for the tip!

avent makes good soft ones too that come
with removable handles. And it's laura's
post that talks about the nuby ones.
