the "morning After" Pill Questions..
Posted: 03-30-07 23:54pm

I was wondering how long its potency lasts.

Let's say a woman has unprotected sex numerous times and misses her period. And go under the situation is that her assumption is correct that she's pregnant. If she takes the pill that day she misses her period, does the pills till work?

If so, how long until after she misses her period can she take the pill? I assume there's a limit until it just won't work or have less than a 90% chance of working. Does anyone know?

Is it brand-based?

Any info at all would be really appreciated. Smile

Unfortunately, the morning after pill only works well within 3 days of the first unprotected sex incident. From 3-5 days there is a smaller chance it will work, and after 5 days, it's useless.

So no, waiting until her missed period means that the pill will be absolutely ineffective. If she has missed her period, this means that she is already pregnant. The morning after pill does not end an existing pregnancy, it only prevents ovulation. If she has missed her period, this means ovulation, fertilization, and implantation has already happened.

I might have the termonology wrong. Is there any sort of pill that I mentioned that exists, however? That you take it after you miss your period?

No. There isn't.

The closest thing is the abortion pill (ru486 or something like that) which I don't believe is legal in the usa. This pill induces an abortion, but I'm not entirely sure if it is taken alone or with another.

After that, there is the actual legal process of a medical abortion which involves two pills, not one.

Those are the only options, and both of them are abortions, which means that the embryo/fetus growing inside of the woman is killed. This is different from the morning after pill, which - once again - only prevents ovulation.

If the gal has missed a period and does not wish to give birth, her only choice at this point is an abortion.

Eiri- RU 486 IS a medical abortion, and it has been available in the us for quite a few years.

You take one-2 pills at the abortion clinic, then later induce a labor type of state at home.

You would need an abortion pill, you would get that from an abortion clinic. IF abortion is illegal in your country, it could be impossible to obtain.

The morning after pill does not kill sperm, it prevents ovulation and thickens cervical mucous.

If you were pregnant and still took the morning after pill (not ru486) would it damage the fetus at all? It seems to be a semi-common question on here. (taking the morning after pill well after 72 hrs.) And I always wondered. I just want to be clear that I am not interested in doing this personally. I only inquire so that I may help inform others with a similar question.

YES, that is the one.

Our bodies naturally excrete a high dose of progestin after we ovulate. This high dose of progestin signals to our brain and pituitary gland that, "Hey, you, we already ovulated!"

This is what the MAP is trying to duplicate, the prgestin surge that Tells your body that you have already ovulated.

Now, even if an egg is fertilized you still have that progestin being excreted, as a side fact.

The Plan B does not do anything to an Implanted Zygote! It will flood the system with progestin, but it does not magically abort the pregnancy. Progestin will not 'kill' the pregnancy.

Yup. Cari was right. The morning after pill is not a spermicide.

Just to add to this, i was a little bit confused as i read the responses because i was under the impression that the morning after pill also prevents implantation of a fertilized egg. well, i did some research and found this:

The active ingredients in morning-after pills are similar to those in birth control pills, except in higher doses. Some morning-after pills contain only one hormone, progestin (Plan B), and others contain two, progestin and estrogen. Progestin prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and keeps a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus (implantation). Estrogen stops the ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation) that can be fertilized by sperm.

So in a sense, vanessalouanne was correct in saying that it kills any remaining sperm. Progestin also prevents a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus. So it doesn't just prevent ovulation.

No, she's not right.

The descritption you gave says it "prevents" the sperm from reaching the egg, but it is not mentioned how it does this. It most likely does not kill them.

The end point is that the original poster was far too late to be using the map for his gf. XD

Right. "Preventing the sperm from reaching the egg" is not necessarily the same as "killing sperm." What you described, ebarn, was not the killing of sperm. Spermicides (things that kill sperm) are non-hormonal methods of birth control. The pill, the shot, and the morning after pill are hormonal. It may not seem like an important difference up front since they all do basically the same thing (preventing pregnancy) in the long run, but it actually can be an important difference. For one thing, hormonal birth control usually requires a doctor. Also, the side effects are quite different. Hormonal birth control can be very dangerous for some women. Some women can't even take it.

I have used the morning after pill 9 days after unprotected sex, it was the soonest I had access to it. I do not recommend waiting that long, I was lucky it worked.

It probably didn't "work". You were probably not going to become pregnant from the encounter regardless of using the map.
