There is new research that shows that PLAN B does not in fact prevent implantation as was once thought.

They did certain tests to determine that the prevention of implantation is 'possible', but not probable.

Well I figured that its main purpose was to prevent ovulation anyway; and if it did somehow occasionally prevent implantation, that the woman was just really lucky.

How It Works

In my understanding (and this is from my super-biology course at my all-women's college) birth control works in three ways- One way is to prevent ovulation, the other is to make it nearly impossible for the sperm to get in by thickening cervical mucus that it would have to go through, and the other is to make it impossible for the fertilized egg to implant in the uterus if the first two fail. I think that combined hormone methods do all of this (estrogen and progestin) but I'm not sure which specifically does which.

Your estrogen and progesterone levels are always fluctuating throughout the month, and the effect of birth control is to level them off and keep them constant so that none of the changes are happening that trigger fertility.

But someone brought up a good point- is birth control (or MAP) dangerous to the fetus is you are pregnant and don't know?

There are women that have 'pill babies', and they babies are perfectly healthy.

OBGYN's state that it is typically understood that BC does not affect a fetus.

It is not an abortion, so it does not 'kill' or 'maim' anything.
