First, let me say that I'm writing this
for my mother -- So it's second-hand,
etc., and everything you recommend, or
tell me, or prescribe will have to get by
her first, and she's quite stubborn. ;]
Two questions:
i. My mother has been ill for about
three-weeks now. She is the recipient of a
donor's kidney as of 2003 -- Our Pastor's,
and all-though temperamental, it's been
doing fine. So, as apart of having a
kidney, you must take immuno-suppressants.
Or something spelled vaguely like that.
Well, of course she's become sick before.
It usually takes several days, sometimes a
week, and all-though hard, she makes it
through it.
However, as of about three weeks ago, she
became ill, and has only steadily become
worse, with brief bouts of -- 'Feeling a
little bit better' in-between. She is
largely bed-ridden, and unable to eat for
fear of throwing up. [Sounds like eating
anything produces an ~80% chance of
purging.]
Further, she's having gastrointestinal
issues; diarrhea, the swelling of her
colon, or something of that sort.
The doctor's, for the past week have been
unable to conclude what she has.
Any ideas?
They've shot-down several, and I can give
you updates later on what those
suggestions were.
Second: What do you feed someone who has
issues containing food? I know
electrolytes would be important, though
she refuses to drink the Gatorade, etc. we
got her.
Though I think right now it's more of an
issue about food.
I know that when she stopped drinking
water for a week -- And salt -- Her body
started retaining toxic levels of
anti-rejection drugs, so anyway to help
that out?
--Though yes, since then she has begun
drinking quite a bit of water, and more
than enough saltines, chips, etc. to
retain that water, with salt.
Bah.

have you been back to see the surgeon? If
not do so. Also becareful with the fluid
intake and salt. the new kidney will have
to expel the excess salt in the system.
Have they (the dr's) ruled out an allergic
reaction to the new medications she's on?
What about the possibility of rejection?
Maybe they need to put her back on
dialysis for awhile to see if that helps
her symptoms. Just a few questions and
suggestions.

I'm sorry to hear that your mother is so
ill. I have no experience with
transplants but I find this site helpful
to me.

Is there a local kidney foundation near
you that might help with support and
special diets and stuff. I wish I could
help. Let me know how she does. Good
luck.
