Severe Back Pain W/bad Stomach Cramps Posted: 04-03-07 00:05am
Last year (late spring/early summer) I
started having occasional "episodes" of
extreme back pain (severe tightness along
the whole back) and really bad, painful
stomach cramps. It felt like someone was
squeezing my insides really tight. It
brings me to tears when the pain is at its
worst. Last June I had an attack so bad in
the middle of the night that it woke me up
and I had to go to the emergency room.
They took x-rays, but couldn't find
anything to explain it. They just sent me
home with some flexeril and some other
pain killer. I've had a few more attacks
like this of unbearable pain in my back
& stomach since then. They did stop
from about October until just a few days
ago. The attacks come on very suddenly
with no warning. I took a flexeril the
other night when it started up again. The
pain lasted for about an hour and a half
and then it just goes away. During the
pain though, it feels like I need to go to
the bathroom because of the stomach
cramping, but I'm unable to go until the
pain goes away. Any ideas what might be
bringing this pain on?

It might be an internal organ problem
along with muscle spasms. I honestly don't
know what might be wrong inside of you but
anything relating to muscle problems has
to do with a lack of exercising and
stretching... and I'm sure we both know
how to fix that part of the problem.
If you can give us more info here about
yourself and your medical history then we
should be able to help you better.

It sounds alot like you could have
gallstones. If you are having attacks
like that, it is time to have a scan for
stone. Any sharp pain on the upper right
side of your back and belly can be caused
by gallstones. Check your skin &
whites of your eyes for any yellowing. If
you see some, call the doctor. Surgery
will take care of severe gallstones. Good
luck!
I have been experiencing the exact same
problem for a little over a year now. The
pain will randomly show up in the middle
of the night. Occasionally, if I sit the
wrong way, I can tell that it's going to
happen. The pain comes every other month
or so. It's absolutely terrible though.
Twice now, I've had it so bad that the
pain wraps around to the front and causes
me to get nauseous and vomit. Usually,
the only thing that will stop the pain is
placing an icepack directly on my bare
skin on my back and sleeping in a recliner
chair. I guess it makes my posture
better, I don't know... This whole ordeal
is quite annoying and I've recently been
told to ask for ultrasound. I haven't
been to the doctor yet about this, but I'm
planning on making an appointment this
week. On a side note, I hadn't had any
back pain until I received an epidural in
June of 2005 for the birth of my
daughter...

Your problem sound alot like mine, with
the exception that mine is more annoying
than painful at this time. Also, I don't
get nauseaus or vomit, but I just went to
the doctor the other day, and explained
what I had, and they said it could be
gallstones. If the problem is severe like
you are discribing, then they can remove
the gallbladder. I am looking into the
gallbladder cleansers at the moment to try
and avoid surgery down the road if I can.
Do you experience any pain in your back
when riding in a car, if you hit a bump? I
do. Mine is sort of like a squeezy pain
that I only get when I have to get out of
a chair, or am trying to turn over in be,
that lately has been radiating to my right
front middle. Most of the other time it's
ok, comes and goes. But if you eat
anything fatty, then feel bloated, gassy,
or experience any of the things you
mentioned in your post, have your
gallbladder checked. It is quite common
to get gallbladder problems during or
after a pregnancy. Good luck with yours!
