Can't Get On Pills ... Are Condoms Really Safe Enough?
Posted: 04-03-07 08:21am

Me and my boyfriend just recently decided that sometime soon we want to have sex. He's a virgin, and he's very nervous about the whole thing. Especially the possibility of getting pregnant which worries me as well. I'm not able to get on birth control pills right now to pay for them because I don't have a job and I don't want to ask my mom to drive me because she's very strict and doesn't agree with sex before marriage. My resort to go to now is condoms, but everyone says they're very very risky. Are they safe enough to use??

If you use them properly they are very safe. The most important thing is to make sure that he stops right after he ejaculates and takes the condom off right away. If you haven't orgasmed it's okay, put on another condom or switch to oral/fingering!

I used condoms for five months until I was able to get on birth control. I didn't get pregnant Wink

I can understand your difficulty with getting to a clinic. My closest clinic used to be 30 minutes away via car. Fortunately I can now walk to one if I really need to, then again I also have a car now.

I would also suggest that you get a dose of plan b to have on hand just in case something does happen. That way you won't have to panic, you will have everything you need to give you peace of mind. That will make the whole experience better.

Latex male condoms (the most common kind) aren't all that risky in my opinion (female condoms are not as effective as male condoms). When used as intended (which isn't hard to do), they are almost as effective as the pill. The problem, however, is that a lot of people don't use them correctly. Same thing with the pill though. A lot of people don't take that as intended either. Obviously, neither one is going to as effective if it isn't being used like it's supposed to be used. We can't blame that on the condom or the pill though. That does not make them risky. It isn't their fault that people don't use them right!

Condoms often come with spermicidal lubricant. This, hopefully, acts as extra protection. Its job is to kill any sperm that might leak out.

I have used many condoms, often as my sole method of birth control. I have never had a problem. I have never been pregnant, and I have never had one break.

To get the most out of your condom:
1. Read the directions
2. Keep them around room temperature. Even your pocket is too hot for them!
3. Don't reuse condoms
4. Check expiration dates
5. Throw the condom away right after he ejaculates. If you want to continue sex, get a new condom. A condom filled with semen is slippery inside and may slip right off.
6. If you want to add lubrication, make sure it says that it is water based.

You have many more options than just telling your Mom. You can get several types of birth control pills at planned parenthood for next to nothing. Also, call your local health department. If you don't have a job they will normally give you at least a depo shot for free. I'm guessing they will do the same for pills. There are MANY more options out there than just pills, and frankly a few of them are safer.
Lastly, I would not recommend only using condoms. Though it is tempting, it isn't recommended to only use one type of birth control, as accidents do happen quite frequently. The statistics that you hear regarding any medication are only if correct if the medication was taken under the supervision of medical professionals in a medical facility. They are not a representation of the actual use by the public, which is in fact a much lower effective rate.

Her problem is that she has no way to get around town... her bf can get condoms, but he can't get her birth control or a pap smear XD

Condoms are very risky because they break.

I would say to use a "Today sponge" with a condom, that way you are double protected.

The today sponge is a sponge with spermicide inside of it, and it kills sperm.
