When did you introduce your baby to solid food? Brianne is 5 months old this month and her doctor said to start her on solid food. I'm a little nervous about it because she has been exclusively breastfed until now. She is able to sit on her own for a few minutes at a time and she sits well in a high chair. Do you think I should listen to the doc? Do the doctors really "know best"?

I think my daughter was about 5 months when I started giving her food. I waited for him to say it was ok. Start slow and if it doesn't agree with her than you can stop. I think you will love giving her solids, because of the cute faces they make and if they really love what you are feeding them, they show it.

most doctors recommend starting between 4-6 months, but you're the mom and you need to do what you feel is best.

finn is 5 months today and we started on solids last weekend. he took to them immediately and dropped one of his daily bottles, so now he gets 4 6oz bottles a day and 2 meals of 3 tablespoons of cereal mixed with 1/2 jar of fruit or veg.

i love feeding him, i think it is so fun. i'm still confused on how much and when to feed him so i'm pretty much winging it, i'm just afraid of overfeeding.

thanks for the replies Smile I think I'll give it a try. Her doc said that I should do the cereal mixed with fruit thing. Does Finn like it?

he *loves* it! so far he's loved everything we've tried, i think carrots have been his favorite. i gave him peas today and i thought he might not like it but he gobbled it up.

he does this really annoying thing though, every time i put a spoonful in his mouth he immediately sticks his thumb in his mouth. i don't know why he does that but he makes a huge mess.

you're going to love it, it is so fun!

Laura exclusively breast feeds Aly, and i think they did kinda well....I am sure she is a champ at it now....not too sure though.

Amelia was 6 months old before solids....she started with rice cereal once a day for a week then we moved to two times a week with a fruit at dinner. (forgot to start with veggies first. didnt' make a difference though) now we have moved to 3 a day cereal in the morning, cereal and fruit or veggie with lunch, and cereal and veggie with dinner. (she is on on oats too but just for breakfast once in a while, i find that too much constapates her.) No meats yet. and i most likely won't start that until she can eat our dinner foods....dont' really care too much for processed meats.

good luck and post first foods pics...the faces are great.

most doctors are still with the old school rules, and dont realize that the american academy of pediatircs now recommends starting solids at 6-8 months, not 4-6. but its up to you as the parent. the doctors are there for advice, they cannot tell you how to raise your child. if you think she is ready go ahead. my son didnt show interest in solids until 9 months old.

I didn't start Ethan on any solids until he was 5 1/2 months. Even after that he didn't show much interest so he only ate baby food once a day. Now he eats three times a day, and is starting to eat mostly table food. I'm trying to get him eating enough to transition from formula to milk.

Oni was 3 weeks when her Dr put her on oatmeal cereal.

5 weeks for solid foods (veggies). But I waited for the veggies between 10-12 weeks.

Her Dr. is very old school.

Im actually taking a class on this right now.

your suppose to start them at 4-6 months. You introduce one foor at a time starting with a rice cereal and then moving on to veggies and last fruit ( because once they taste the sweetness theyll be less likely to want the veggies)
biggest thing is do it one food at a time and watch for allergies

no, that is not true. you are probably reading outdated information. just fyi, the american academy of pediatrics now recommends starting solids at 6-8 months. this is because many babies cant properly digest food before this time.im sure you can find this if you google it. also, new research is showing that you can start in whatever order you want to, you dont have to start with veggies and fear a sweet tooth if you start with fruit. its all a bunch of bologna.

here you go:
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) acknowledges that there are no "strict" age guidelines on introducing solid foods to your baby. However, the AAP, along with the CDC and the WHO do recommend that you offer nothing but breast milk and/or formula until you baby is at least 6 months old.

This ensures optimal nutritional exposure and may stave off food allergies amongst other issues. Further studies have shown that an infant's gastrointestinal tract has not or may not have matured enough to properly digest/utilize solid foods until around 6-8 months old! I didn't start this post to start an argument... I just wanted to see when you all started on solids because I was nervous about starting her. Sorry if it's starting a "he said" "she said" disagreement.
