So far I've been to a maternity a few times due to minor complications and shots and so on. I don't know what a nurse in maternity is suppoesed to do exactly, what their job description is, but where I go I find them extremely sweet caring patient and helpful.
They are always the one's that administer my shots, run all my tests check in on me before the doc comes and so on. I'm sure when it gets down to giving birth they have even more duties, and the ones around here are a treat, I've always been used to emerg. nurses who have always been wicked health forum to me, and then maternity nurses are like sweet as pie.
Yay for being pregnant.

My Mother was an RN (retired now) in Maternity ward. She took vital signs, made sure the patients were comfortable, gave necessary meds, hooked up any required IV's, informed family/friends of patients progress, too many things to really list. Basically, was there thru the entire birth doing whatever was necessary in order for patient to have a healthy baby. Not really sure what questions you are looking for hopefully there will be an RN here who can help you!

Are you looking for an RN that works in your doctor's office or a RN that works in a hospital caring for mothers that have just delivered?

In the dr. office my OB's RN tested my urine, weighed me, asked questions as to how I was doing (any contractions, pains, leaking, etc) and how the baby seemed to be doing (movement). She would take my blood pressure and that is about it.

In the hospital they were so awesome. They hooked up and monitored my IV, took blood pressure, gave me my pain meds, brought me water or anything else I wanted to eat or drink. I had a problem with nausea and I felt very very itchy from the morphiene they put in my IV, so they gave me benedryl for the itching and something for nausea in my IV. They helped me with breastfeeding, and sent in lactation specialists if I wanted. They checked my belly to be sure my uterus was going down, put in and removed my cathetar (spelled that one wrong), and removed the tape from my incision. They helped me get up for the first time, and stood by my side until I felt safe to walk on my own. (I had a c-section and couldn't get up by myself for the first 7-8 hours). A couple hours after my surgery a tech came in and changed my bedding and washed my back. They were a great moral support and I can't say enough about the good ones. They treated me like I was royalty.
