I might be terminating the baby after the
amnio comes back because my baby has
trisomy 13. Can someone tell me who's had
an abortion, tell me what all happens and
if it hurts and being 18 weeks, how will
they abort it? Please don't judge me. I am
not 100% sure yet. I just want information
on it

Usually, when a woman terminates for fetal
deformity she has a choice as to what kind
of abortion she may have.
There are two types. Labor and delivery
induction, and D&E.
L&D is usually done by your own
private ob, if they offer it, and it
involves delivering a stillbirth.
Basically, your baby is given an injection
of digoxin into the heart to stop its
beating, then labor is induced. You
deliver an intact baby, which is important
to many women dealing with fetal
deformities.
D&E is often done in a clinic, but a
womans own doctor may offer it as well.
For ANY aboriton procedure, even ones at 6
weeks, a woman can easily be put to sleep
for the abortion.
You can be put to sleep for the abortion.
Basically, the abortion is done with
suction aspiration, much like an early
abortion. Suction is used, and curettage
is used to ensure all fetal parts are
removed.

Well, the doctor called today and said the
baby will not have any quality of life,
they are 100% sure on that. So they are
sending me to a place for me to be in
labor and be sedated. I will be put to
sleep and they will take the baby out like
a normal pregnancy and do an autopsy on it
to see exactly what went wrong and if it
was in our genes. My baby has a cleft lip,
eyes are far apart, and the spine is
curved. So they said the baby will be
handicapped it's whole life and it's also
got clubbed hands and feet.

find that this was just a fluke and your

Okay, that would be a 'labor and delivery'
termination.
Thanks to modern medicine and good
testing, we can accurately tell women a
diagnosis, and explain quality of life.
I am very glad to hear that your doctor
has been helpful in helping you find a
facility to perform the termination, it
really helps.

Well I just got back from the doctor today
and he said he is setting me up an
appointment on friday to be in labor. He
said he will give me medication to start
my contractions and it will take 12-24
hours to have the baby. But since I am 19
weeks, is it gunna feel like a normal
pregnancy? I never had a baby so I don't
know if it's going to hurt. So friday
morning I will be in labor. They said
after the baby comes out I have the choice
to hold the baby or see him. I don't think
I could do that, but they will take
pictures of him for me to keep. I am
sooooo scared but of course, my fiance is
supporting me and is going to be there by
my side. So hopefully everything goes
well.

before you make your choice - I hope you
are fully informed on this condition.
Not all children with trisomy 13 die in
the first month
http://www.livingwithtrisomy
13.org/
there are some on there 19 and 22 years
old.
Also you realise that you must have
genetic counselling because trisomy 13
isn't a one off occurence.
If this is what your child genuinely has
then potentially every subsequent
pregnancy will also be affected by trisomy
13.
It is possible to acheive a normal
pregnancy but this will require the
assistance of a qualified genetic
counsellor and endocrinologist.
another helpful site to help you make an
informed decision is

they are gonna put you to
sleep right?so i'm assuming they will
still have the child for you to hold when
you wake up?I'm so so so sorry for what
you are going through.I couldn't imagine
having to make a decision like that.Let me
just say if I were you I don't know what I
would do,but there is a chance he/she will
live.Whatever you choose I hope for you to
get through it hun.good luck and I'll be
thinking of you.
**edit- I just watched the video on that
link and I almost cried.that link doesn't
show the worst that can happen though
kia,it shows all the children who look
normal.Man,I would be so torn on what to
do.a cleft lip and club foot/hands can be
fixed. . .

that's the point mel.
not all kids are severely affected by
trisomy 13.
it shows that many do have good lives.
and no, you are not "put to sleep" when
they induce labour.
I'm suprised that the induced labour has
been planned so quickly and without
counselling - but then she's not in the UK
so who knows.

Yeah... it's so hard when it's a wanted
child... god, I don't know what I'd do. I
think with something more serious than
this, I'd completely abort... In this
case, who knows? It seems like many of
them had developmental problems. That
would weigh a lot on my mind.

They can sedate women through the latter
part of procedure, it is not uncommon at
all!
I am wishing you luck on friday, and I
hope that everything is peaceful and over
with as quickly as possible.

Here, they really don't counsel you on
things like that. Her doctor spoke with
her. Covered the basics, you know odds of
it happening agian, things that could have
caused it, and if she will have the same
problem in the future. But honestly, I
would be surprised if the doctor spoke to
her longer than 20 min. He may have
offered her concelling. But it is not
mandatory by any means. She will, however,
probably have to see a genetic councellor
before she ttc agian. (Or soon after
conceiving)
She is being a trooper. A very stong
women. Much stonger than I could be in
that situation. She will be in the
hospital for a day or two. Then she will
give us an update on how she is doing.
