I know this is extremely
obsessive-compulsive, and probably sounds
completely stupid, but does anyone know
the chances of the "deadly black" Aspergillus
niger mold growing on small bits of
wet wood, such as the reeds for a
saxophone?? I made the mistake of trying
to keep mine moist by keeping the whole
reed-guard in a plastic bag, and I just
discovered today that whitish mildew had
started growing without, and greeish-black
mold growing on the reeds themselves. I
trashed the reeds, and am soaking the
guard in ammonia, but what are the chances
of me getting sick from any of this???
Yesterday, I remember smelling an odd
smell about the reeds that I found out to
be associated with the mould today, and I
used one of the now-gone reeds
yesterday.....
I know it's probably nothing and that it
might not be known for sure, but should I
be fine?

It sounds as though it would be very
unlikley that the mold would grow on your
reed. As long as you keep good care of the
reed you should be fine.
Good Luck

Yeah you should never store it in plastic.
Just keep it in a clean cloth or the case
it came in: or you can buy plastic reed
guards. You can never fully clean a read
after it's been in your mouth, so the mold
growing on it is probably from your own
mouth.
I don't think it's the deadly kind of
mold, but you were right to trash the
ruined stuff. Just get some new ones and
remember to take proper care of your
reeds.
Here's a link to another discussion on
reed care. The post by Sigmund451 should
