Just a quick question to set my mind to
rest really.
As I type this, my grandmother lies dying
of multiple organ failure, slowly but
surely.
I went to see her last night to say my
goodbyes, but obviously she is doped up to
the eyeballs on morphine. My mother says
she snaps out now and again, mumbles a few
words and passes out again. She has signed
a non-resuscitation waiver so that if she
slips away, the medical staff will not
attempt to resuscitate her.
When I try and ask the Drs and nurses ANY
question all they want to say is "Oh She
is comfortable." I KNOW she is
comfortable, they don't want to answer any
specific questions at all.
As I say, I know she is in no pain, but I
want to know, does anyone know how aware a
patient is once they are basically
circling the drain? she has literally
days, and I just need to know if the
morphine makes her totally unaware of her
surroundings, or if she has some
comprehension of whats going on?
Cheers

Does anyone have any ideas?
If it ends up that it's proved/or theory
that there is comprehension I want to go
back one last time to see her and say
goodbye one last time.
My goodbye was understandably difficult,
especially as I didn't know if she could
hear me, that with the trauma of seeing
her dying in front of me kinda has me
shaken.
I'm at work just now, but can't
concentrate worth a damn.
Any advice would be seriously appreciated.

I would go and say her goodbye even if she
is not aware. That's what I did to my
brother when was dying like that.

Too late unfortunately, she passed away at
1700hrs GMT on Wednesday.
Shame really, clearly more pregnancy and
sexual heath experts on these forums
anything else really.
