The monitor has an "ultra sensitive sensor pad that is tucked under the crib mattress to detect the baby's breathing movements. If none is detected for 20 seconds, an alarm sounds," according to angelcare, inc., the monitor's manufacturer. (several companies manufacture baby-breathing monitors. Cost of anglecare's: $89. Call (888) 391-9091 for more information.)

baby breathing monitors were developed for consumers concerned about sudden infant death syndrome (sids)—a condition where a child stops breathing and dies. The monitors are modeled after hospital-issue baby breathing monitors

found this about them hope it helps

Yeah she is right, I am the one who told you, they go under the mattress, and it is for less than 20 seconds I think it is like 10 , it makes you aware right away. And they also have those shaped things so the baby will stay on there back..Both reduce death from sids.

Oh yes I saw them at wal-mart for 99.99! Its a new try to try and stop sids or something.. I really want one! It alarms in 20 seconds if the slightest breathing sound isnt heard.... They look just like 2 baby monitors too... Its really neat! Has anyone tried em??? I wanna know if they really work!

I have heard that it can fasley go off. But then again I suppose I would rather it go off and be a false alarm and be annoying, than lose my child.

If you are worried about sids here's what I have been told about helping reduce the risks......
1: car and home = smoke free zone
2: donot use pillows, doonas, bumpers in the cot
3: do not have toys in the cot with baby
4: always make up the cot at the bottem of the bed, so that babies feet touch the bottem of the cot, it helps prevent baby from smothering by wiggling under the covers,
5: dress in layers, that way a layer can be removed to prevent over heating
6: dress baby in similar clothes as to what you are wearing, ie weight and length, use the same ammount of blankets as what you would need to be comfy, then add a blanket.....
7: keep baby away from passive smoke before and after birth......
8: always lay baby on back to sleep.

Yeah the crib thing is dumb, but the bassinet one is cute. That rocks or massages the baby, sean had one its cute...I would def. It go off as a false alarm than for real... I do worry about sids. I mean sean will not I repeat will not sleep on his back...Any advice. Imean he is a crawling, moving, rolling boy

Jayden wont sleep on her back either!! She screams if you make her try to sleep on it. She has been like that since she was born. The thing i've been wondering is i've been seeing alot of cases of sids lately and the babies are like 8 and 9 months old~!!! I thought that went away at like 5 months. Or greatly reduced. I just let her sleep on her stomach, but I constantly check on her. I only sleep for like 4 hrs at night anyway so I just turn up her monitor and hope I will hear her if something happens. I mean my monitor is up so lound I hear every breath she takes.
